Do you get your slides mounted?

I've started noticing alot of cardboard "lint" on the slides that I get back mounted from Dwaynes. And now that I scan them I've noticed that they have to be cropped alot to take account of the curved edges the mounts introduce. So, I've started thinking that maybe I should get them unmounted. I never use my slide projector anymore. Do you get your slides mounted or unmounted? Have you noticed the problems I've mentioned when scanning them?

I've noticed the same from Dwayne's/Fuji prepaid. My local processor uses square mounts - no round corners - and is lint free. Also more expensive. Why does Dwayne's use the curved corner mounts anyway? A total pain for scanning, regardless of the lint.

I like my slides mounted. I usually use A&I mailers, and they use cardboard mounts, but they seem to have pretty clean edges. My best slides I remount in Gepe Anti-Newton Glass mounts so they don't pop in the projector. I haven't tested to see whether these give me sharper scans, but that's on my agenda, since I'm trying to catch up on filing my slides and will probably remount a few.

I mount my slides myself. I usually use standard Gepe glassless mounts, but for the best slides I use Anti-Newton mounts. Of course I also like to use my projector occasionally, since it's the best way to view slides. Much better than scanning and viewing from the screen, no matter how good scans. I would also like to get a MF projector for 6x6 and 645 slides, but unfortunately they are so rare that it's almost impossible to find a used one and the new ones are very expensive. A MF slide show is very impressive.

Yes! I haven't had much trouble with cardboard mounts, but prefer the plastic ones. They last longer because the edges don't start to delaminate when used in an automatic projector.
IMHO the only way to view slides is on a BIG screen. So impressive! I haven't seen a digital projector yet that can match an optical one. If there are any (and there may be) I am not willing to pay the price. 😎

Even used ones are quite expensive, but I've discovered that Beseler Slide King projectors are fairly cheap. They handle up to lantern sized slides and have various carriers and lenses. It's hard to find carriers, though, that correspond to standard slide mounts, though, so what I've thought of doing is having a bunch made up by a place that does custom cut mats in quantity. I've cut a few by hand to test the concept, and the 6x7 slides look beautiful projected. I figure if I have them cut for 6x7, maybe half of them horizontal, half vertical, with external dimensions for lantern slides, I can mask them for 6x6 as needed.

Hmm. I've thought about using Dwaynes. Slides done by my local shop come back with no lint and nice square corners. Roundness would definitely put me off.

BTW, are all 35mm slide projectors pretty much the same? if not, what should I look for if/when I'm in the market?

When we used to screen slides for publication the autofocus Kodak Carousels were pretty much the gold standard of projectors. Hundreds each week on eBay.

Never! Even cutting the slides into strips of six can be hazardous. Cutting dark slides in half...
But when I let them roll only, they managed to get them scratched. So the usual cutting is best. Least danger of damage.

I use A&I for film and they are wonderful, but here in San Diego we have a great lab that specializes in slides called "Chrome" they are the best I've used and they uses only plastic.

I've really been unhappy with Dwayne's recently. They actually ruined a roll of E6 chromes (that has never happened to me before!), and many times developed slides seem to have some "spatter" on them that I never see on their C41 work. They also return medium format chromes in one long roll in a cardboard tube in which the best shot is always kinked. (How do they know?)

Does anyone know of a good lab in the NY area for doing slides? Plastic, square mounts only, please.

I used to use Modernage, and if I remember correctly, they used plastic mounts. I'm not sure if they still do.

I don't get my cut or mounted. I cut them myself and store them in negative sleeves. It's just easier to scan them this way, plus it saves money.

I just spent the last four days scanning about 250 of the 500 mounted slides I have. A project I put off way too long.

Film strips from now on... but then, I don't project slides anyway. I want to get them into digital, so I can store the slides away for archival.
