I just got a new Domke bag (f-5xb) and I noticed that it was different from the one that I had before....the bottom of this one had a hard plastic insert sewn into the bottom of the bag....My old one did not have this insert... As I was cutting it out, I started to think about the fact that I have modified every Domke bag that I have ever owned in one way or another....
Yesterday I got my A & A strap sewn together because I was tired of it getting bigger (pulling apart) when I would use the camera all day out in Bangkok....
anyways, does anybody else modify their bags and/or straps?
cheers, michael

A couple more
Domke f-803...I know most people dont like velcro, but I do.
I removed one of the dividers and moved the other one into the middle of the bag....it gives me more room (I have big hands) and I use big lenses.
This bag is pretty new too..I had the same model before and loved it....I sewed some velcro on the flaps.
cheers, michael

Now you've done it! You will start a whole new thing on RFF, bag mods!
by the way, I use my bags hard, but I've never put as much wear on one as you have on that Domke! Serious shooter.

All my camera straps have velcro sewn on the bottom side and my camera bags straps have it sewn on both sides.
The epaulettes of my photovest have velcro on them as well so nothing (including a 300 2.8 attached to a motorized nikon F2AS weighing about eight or nine pounds) ever slides off my shoulders.
And the camera straps themselves have all had their length adjustment buckles removed, and the straps sewn to a particular, permanent size.
And three of my motorized SLRs have homemade wrist straps made from nylon backpack straps anchored to custom made aluminum anchor plates and of course looped closed with velcro.

Love that old bag. Gear with character just sings to me.

I mod everything I own. I can't leave anything alone. Bags, cars, computers, cameras, snowboards... It's a sickness, I tell you.
Me too. But I see it as something that keeps me from getting into trouble with the law.

I still have that old bag.....the problem is, I can actually stick my finger completely through the bag on a couple of the corners, that's how worn out the bag is....I've had to sew it in a couple of places so the tears wouldn't spread....all in all, I love it...it has been to so many places and has gone through a lot with me....unfortunately, I threw away my old Domke 5xb when I was at my parents house earlier this year.....My new 5xb arrived from B&H and I wasn't going to carry the old one half way across the world to Bangkok with me....and it was in even worse shape than the bag above......I felt "a little guilty" just tossing it in the trash, but.....It was beyond repair and had lived a good life...and served me well

Hi Michael,
how do you remove the plastic insert? From the inside, or from the outer side?
I also bought a Domke f-5xb again and I wondered what was different. I think you hit the point.
I tweaked my Domke with a MATIN Neoprene Bag Strap you find on eBay. For me its much more comfortable than the original Domke strap.

"Do you modify your camera bags/straps?"
No, but my camera bags/straps have modified me - I now walk with a slight stoop!
