Do your hands look "weird"?

I dont get it, every time I see my hands in a picture or something they always look wrong, its like they are always deformed or unconfortably placed or something. Being an art student and recently working with human form sculpture, we study anatomy to help us reproduce it, for instance I am very careful about the placement of hands and feet and legs in my photos as its easy to make these things look weird.

I think David Hockney can't paint hands and feet. Look at how often feet are placed behind something in his paintings.

And Bart Simpson (and so on) doesn't have four fingers.

that is way they are hard to draw and paint realistically.

Low light situation. You focused on her face not your hands. Do a self portrait & focus on your hands with the mirror & without.

An old adage in painting is to look how well the artist paints hands. For in painting hands are more difficult that faces.

I always thought four fingers and a thumb was considered the standard?? What is odd though, is having a third hand growing out the top of your head!!

I've always thought the same about mine, but that's cause I tend to use pretty small cameras and my hands are freakishly large.

At least you don't get a strange, constipation-like face when you're focusing :bang: My right hand is all contorted, too!

🙂 'f/stopblues' - I have the same ... 'thing' with scrunching up my face when behind the camera - I just can't stop myself doing it.

Avotius, I think the weirdness is in seeing yourself from an angle that you don't normally get to see. Go to one of those tailors shops with the mirrors all around and you'll probably be asking why your neck, nose, ears look so weird.

More seriously, Avotius, I think Kully has it; you're not used to seeing your hands from that view point.
Much like how my voice sounds to me--it's OK, usually, but awful on the rare occasions I've heard a recording of my self.

Probably many of us think some of our body parts look weird - I sure do. The main thing is, do your hands do the job?
Study people writing - there are so many ways to hold a pencil, and most look awkward to me. Yet, others writing is generally better than mine.
In any case, think form and function, that's what's important.
As an aside, I've always loved that photo of a girl holding a Leica. The lens and large viewfinder look like distorted eyes, yet it has an intense look about it.
