I'm going to show my students this tomorrow! I teach in an inner-city school in a large American city. Half of our students are black (Americans of African ancestry), and they almost never see african art, literature, culture. I teach literature, and much of the curriculum is devoted to writings by European and white American authors. I have been able to show them a lot of great literature and art by Black Americans, but none from their homeland. Our white students get to read a lot of European work, and see a lot of European art...stuff made in the countries their ancestors came from. I'd like to be able to do the same for my Black students. Many of them feel like the stuff we teach is irrelevant to them, and they're right to some extent.
Thanks for showing us this, I think my kids will like it too!
