and yet, I'll be willing to bet there is a small bit of fen here. The new BBC version of "Doctor Who" started on Sci-Fi channel tonight...

To me, this is like some one took all the good stuff out of ST:TOS (as well as ST:TNG) and managed to ignore the silly sh*t...

Anyone else here that is a fan of the Doctor?

William

Oh yes, definitely a fan here. In fact, the only late-night TV I got to watch growing up was when my local PBS ran a full week's worth of episodes every Saturday night beginning at 11:30pm. Great stuff, I liked Tom Baker the best of the old Doctors.

I enjoyed the new show quite a bit. The production quality may be higher, but the fun remains.

I'm a fan of Doctor Who as well, although I was mostly too young to see the old episodes in any kind of logical order, which I suppose was ok with a show like Dr. Who, once I figured out that he coudl manifest himself in different bodies and all that.

I enjoyed the new version that they showed tonight, it's not an earth-shatteringly good show like Battlestar Galactica (the new one) but it is enjoyable.

To be honest, the low production values of the old show just added to its cult charm I think, a bit like the old star trek with all the cheesy sets and crappy costumes.

I never could get into Dr Who, but while STTNG was waaaay slicker - after a while I was like "Blow something up already. It's a freakin WARSHIP, OK?!"

Wait til you see the episode with the Dalek... 😉

Ps. ST-TNG and all it's spin offs were PC crap! It was like watching a corporate boardroom in space!

I go back even further. I was hiding behind the furniture during the first series when the Doctor first went to Skarro!

Count me in, I've been a fan since I was 14 - John Pertwee was "theDoctor" then. (I think, us yanks only got to see them on PBS well afterthe UK aired them)

The first time I remember watching Dr Who, he was played by William Hartnell and they were way back in prehistoric times. My favourite Doctor was Patrick Troughton and my favourite 'baddies' were the Icemen, the Cybermen and the Daleks. The episodes where the Icemen had a secret base in the London Underground scared the pants off me and I watched from behind the sofa (a fine and respectable tradition carried on to this day by many children).
I think the programme went downhill after Tom Baker.

Time for a poll - 'Who was your favourite Dr Who?' (some element of symmetry in that question) 😉

This series they're showing on SciFi channel, is it the one already aired in the UK?

Yes, we saw it last year. There was also a Christmas special.

<edit>Sorry I should read the poster's name before replying, obviously you know it was already aired here, lol!

i watch it all the time. Friday night is Sci-Fi night here. SF channel repeats my three favs - SG-1; SG-Altantis and BSG. I am glued to the tube until 1:00 a.m. each Friday night. My simplest indulgence I think. Gives my brain a chance to not focus on the dreariness of my social work job. Lets my wildman soar and yell at the top of his lungs. Allows my inner child to be not-PC for about three hours. Ronin on Atlantis is wonderful. A true visceral being. Goes with his gut...time and time again. Luke

That's exactly my Friday night schedule as well. I don't watch much TV normally but dang, the Sci-Fi Channel sure figured out how to keep my butt parked on the couch one night a week.

Oh man, somebody mentioned Stargate! I love that show. And of course I bought all the DVD episodes. One thing about it though is they branched off into the new age manifesto stuff. With that and Richard Dean Anderson taking off has kind of broken my concentration on the show.

Wish that I had Sci-Fi channel here in Costa Rica so I could check out the new Doctor Who. There will be re-runs though.
