Does 28 cron block M8 viewfinder?

Mundane question sorry, but my attempts at searching didn't find an answer. I have the 28 Asph Elmarit right now but an extra stop would be handy at times.

Yes it does, even without the hood. With the hood a lot, though the hood isn't all that necessary.

You soon forget about it, and don't think its that big an issue since the framelines are not very accurate anyway and I suppose if you want f2 you have to put up with it.

With the hood on, and the lens focussed to 5' the 90mm framelines are touched. There is a cut-out in the hood, but not a big enough one to matter much, so it is still in the way. At closest focus approaching a quarter, more like a fifth. W/o the hood, minor intrusion. The inner edge of the partial 28 frameline at the bottom right is lined up with the edge of the lens with the filter. Not terrible at all. The Summicron is smaller than a 50/1.4.

I use this aftermarket hood on one of my Summicrons, pricey but wonderful, and barely noticeable. The other wears a Contax G 28/35 hood- more intrusion but I already had it...

Its my most used lens on the M8 and you soon forget about it. A dream combo.

You can get yourself the now discontinued 35 Summilux ASPH hood, to fit on the 28 Cron ASPH.
With this, the lens is virtually identical in size (and mild blockage) to the 35 Lux ASPH.

The original huuuuge plastic container, the 28 Cron comes with is crazy and never left my storage. With the new hood, the 28 Cron is plain sweet - I use it on the M8.2 and on film without issues.

not to a point where it annoys you. honestly, i been using this lens for awhile and didnt even noticed/recalled until you mentioned it.

Lens blocked my viewfinder somewhat, but not significantly, and it was never a problem. After all, this is an occupational hazard with Ms, that one lens or another you use will cause some viewfinder blockage. You learn to live with it...

The original hood is indeed ridiculous and blocks a large portion of the viewfinder and 28mm framelines on the M8. Plus, you probably get stuck in doorways if you use that thing. But the lens is sweet.

Just ordered one as my square box from leica version came apart and I can't stomach paying their price for such a poor design.

Agreed; this is the same box style as the stock 28 'cron hood but quite a bit smaller. Certainly appropriate for using the 28 on the M8 where the angle of view is not obstructed by this hood.

It's Leica part 12589, I see now $115 at B&H though it was $90 a couple years ago when I got one.

Doug, it looks similar, but is made of softer plastic and has an entirely different locking mechanism.
Opposed to the original Cron hood, it locks super tight, feeling like a part of the barrel.
I like it a lot more + I shoot in times with both lenses in the bag - sharing the same front cap helps, as I have less fiddling.
The biggest advantage apart from size during handling is packing space.
The 35 Lux hooded 28mm fit's in my standard size LowePro lens sleeve, when traveling - the original hood does not.
