My Horizon shot was taken in Peru, near Puno. Its on one of the Floating (reed) Islands made by the Uros people who live on these man made islands on Lake Titicaca. The idea was to try to show the people the houses and the Lake in one shot.

The S3 (I have now checked it out) like the 202 has two drum speeds and then the shutter speeds are set by varing the size of the slit in the drum (a bit like a focal plane shutter). The higher drum speed gives shutter speeds of 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, & 1/250 plus 1/500 on the high speed examples examples. Lower drum speed gives 1 sec, 1/2 , 1/4 , 1/8 . There is no problem hand holding at any of the the faster drum speed settings and this is the way I mainly use the camera (Peru shot 1/250@f16), but of course sharpness can always be improved by using a tripod. I find that with the lower drum speed I can if I am careful hand hold the 1/8 sec speed and even have gotten away with 1/4 sec. The rotating drum may even show some advantage here over say the focal plane shutter in a Leica because the film is still seeing a slit where at these speeds in a normal focal plane shutter the whole of the film is exposed in one go with one blind following the other. A tripod is definately recommended for consistant best results with the slow drum speed settings though. To get maximum depth of field (I tend to like my panoramics sharp from front to back) with the fixed focus lens it needs to be well stopped down and this means unless the light is good or you are using fast film you can soon be on to the slower drum speed.

My early 202 is at a disadvantage here as there is no 1/30 sec and you then drop to 1/8 on the slower drum speed. My partner has a modified 202 which has 1/30 on the higher & 1/15 on the lower, which increases the hand holding speeds possible. The S3Pro & the 202s seem to have the 1/30 but not 1/15 which is a pity.

When hand holding as I stated before I don't use the handle and personally think I can hold the camera steadier that way and the camera is not so obvious in the hand when shooting candids. My partner prefers to use the handle and she gets good resultsthis way, so each to his own.

pls revise these shutter speeds: there are only four possible per rotation-speed..
the mai problem with having 1/30 or not is this:
when shooting indoors with people one must have a slow exposure time but rotation must be quick. Thats why 1/30 of horizont(old) and S3pro is absolute MUST have beside changing film to lens-distance to get better DOF. see my other long thread about dymo-tape or closeuplenses.
s3pro still has the problem if inferior lens/good 202-lens replaced. at f16 it shows diffraction. images not sharp when enlarged bit(30x loupe will prove it.) only compare 8, 11 with 16 of both 202 and s3pro. no need for perfect scanner. pbase-proofs i had given are gone.

I just sold my XPan and have a S3. As you know the XPan is a very fine camera. Ive also owned a widelux and an original all metal Horizon. The Horizon works and is sharp but looks and operated like it was forged on an anvil. The S3 is much better in smoothness and operation. The build is very good and the lens is fairly sharp. It's a much nicer camera than the Widelux ans older Horizont.

I enjoy using it But it takes patience loading it. Its certainly a creative tool in the right hands. I think it Jeff Bridges that does a lot of Widelux work. You might google his name and Widelux.

I really love the wide aspect ratio even though im not a landscape shooter. Im much less in film now and more digital but did have thd xpan. Fuji 617 and a Roundshot.

For the price the S3 is a lot of fun.

Horizont-cameras are even older. you will appreciate when DL3 will come out 3 lens-one-shot 120 degr. camera by kmz-zenith-silvestri

I would bet the Horizon D-L3 will never be released. The prototype was revealed at Photokina 2010, with the intention that the camera would be released the following year I think. With competitors such as the "sweep panorama" mode widely available on normal digital cameras, as well as plain old software stitching, I wonder how much of a market there really would be for the D-L3.

look at kmz-zenith-site-news about investments in new products and quality. Oneshot-120° is innivative. forget sweep-panorama. it will not work for low light and people moving let alone 3d. the same problem with so called 3d-lens by samsung. its 3d-crap. the same with 3d-lens by panasonic. wrong design-had to be redesigned/improved.
I would no wonder if we will see worlds first 3d-pancam. on mars there is one but cannot work since the lander is not properly levelled.....
kmz-zenith/silvestri had concentrated their forces and waiting until better climate. good.

This old thread reminded me to use my Horizon 202. I used ISO 400 film in it so that the aperture can be smaller.

both cams are fixed focus but there are workarounds to get better DOF(mainly for foreground)
a) adding tape(dymotape is most simple)to filmrails or
b) using DIYcloseup-lenses

when lens is fixed focus and no adjustments are made DOF is carried out with stopping down lenses.
if we need f16 and long exposure s3pro will show blurred image when enlarged big(30cm high and more-12x and more)
And it CAN be enlarged very big when the right good lens is inside.
It IS in 202. Yes after all the problems with 202(who has a non-rebuilt-202 with NO PROBLEMS? Light-fall-in-banding etc.
One needs a repairman-reconfigured 202. OR better: s3pro with 202-lens.

best aperture are 5.6/8 to 11 for s3pro and 5.6/8 to 16 for 202 depending distance. with tape on filmrail 0.2or 0.25mm(pls check thread) or closeup-lens(i dont yet have). i had one for testing from rainer.k.lampinen(Technopan)
