Yes and no Raid! I think one things are personal tastes and preferences, another things is the avaluation of somebody's work.
Let's assume I like abstract art and design: I could say I like thie kind of pictures but I do not like landscapes or formal portraits. Which absolutelu does not mean thay cannot be good pictures. Simply do not suit my taste but still are good.
Of course if I want to buy a photo or a painting to hang in my living room I agree a good one is the one I like![]()
I understand what you mean. I always try to understand the different tastes when I look at someone's work. I am not evaluating another person's work.

To me, a good one is one that aligns with my taste. As you said Robert, doesn't mean if I don't like an image it's not a good image. I try to keep an open mind when looking at colleagues work but we're all human and have our built in tastes and filters.
I prefer (generally) color images to B/W, I like strong design. This image has that. I prefer stronger more interesting light, but I would have given this a second look.

The other thing is if Ralph Gibson is selling his prints for only $2000, there is no hope for any of us of making a living in the fine art photography field.
Well, he also owns Lustrum Press, which might help. Incidentally, I found an interesting NYT article about how he started that; it all had to do with the aerospace industry's taste for lavishly-printed annual reports. (If it turns out this is behind a paywall, sorry; maybe I can summarize...)

RG critiques..
Are mostly on some level..
Just jealousy..
As in..
WWTFK???
I coulda done that..
Why is Ralphy... gettin all the glory?
I would venture..
Because...he...is...lol..
Basically all this critique stuff is sheer intellectualism..a product of the mind..and judgement..
Pretty much college mental stuff..zzzz..
As in..
Yes and No..
Good and Bad..
Heaven and Hell..
What grade did I receive..?
That kinda sheit..
And Ralphy...gets.. the internet Gong..and the hook..off to stage right..from people that use their eyes..and brain..and imprinting..to make judgement..
Happens every day of the week..24/7..
But I would venture..
If your daughter or wife or son....made that shot..
Or...even...you...
And got the L award..and the cash..and the prestige!
Well..
There wouldnt be too much rumbling..about that at all..
In fact..just maybe.. you would say to people..
You know..Leica is selling my daughters prints..and she won photo of the year..
Pretty good huh?
Yeah!

It is not partly a marketing vehicle. It is entirely a marketing vehicle. And Leica needs to get a new translation service. In English on its website it is called "Leica Picture of the Year 2021". Picture?
Seems correct to me ... its a picture .
That`s what we call them

...is kind of lame? I mean, seriously:

If I had shot that I would probably be happy with it, and post it on my Instagram, and it might get six or eight likes, and that would be the end of it...
Ok, this is it? LOL

Not one of his best.
If not for RG being attributed, it wouldn’t get more than a second or two of viewing before moving on.

I'm not trying to cause any trouble now... I think 'picture' usage is ok.
Think of the movies. We would have to change it from 'motion-picture show' to 'motion-photograph show'. Doesn't roll off the tongue as well...

Blondie, "Picture This" would lose something if she had done "Photo This". Great in concert.
Ralph Gibson's color photography is consistent with this new image. "Umbrella on the Beach", It could fit in "1971-2004 France Color". Well before the Digital cameras from Leica. If you like The France Color series, you probably would also like this image.
Ralph Gibson studied Photography while in the Navy. He has had a highly successful career. He can take pictures of what he wants to and has made a good living with it. That is a success story. He also uses Leica cameras. That is a good story for Leica as well.

Yes we do that too but its more common to say ..."get any good pictures" 0r "that`s a good picture " .
Back on subject ... I must admit that that I find Gibson is far too pretentious for my taste and that particular shot unremarkable .
That would be the kindest description .

I like the photo, but calling it the best taken with a Leica all year seems like a stretch. OTH, who knows? Maybe Leica photographers are slipping.

This Leica promo video shows how the boat image was taken. Also RG plays guitar! I didn't know that. Anyone know where this Marina is? Looks inviting. It's icy and 19deg. F here in Massachusetts

So, basically they said hey we need to make a video of you photographing something and then we will use that image for this ad campaign? I think he did well under the circumstances.

Looks like he used a 135 APO-Telyt-M for the shot - for a little compression à la Saul Leiter? Interesting that the model number and s/n are missing from hot-shoe frame. Perhaps an early R&D model or it was digitally obscured for privacy?

Well, as a noun photo and picture can be synonymous. As a verb, telling someone to photograph this means something different than telling someone to picture this.
