does anyone have photos from the M8. Perhaps the camera was reviewed by someone. Any info is appreciated.

Why the thumbs-down? Just curious.

Nice conversion too, Han. What method do you use? I normally use color channels in a levels layer and a gradient layer, but that costs time, so I recently purchased Harald Heim's plugin BWStyler and first results look promising.

Well .. i used about every plugin and method on the market ... but if i do not need a filter-effect or want a quick conversion i find i get the best result with the simple approach:
- image/ mode ... set to lab color
- select lightness channel in the channel palette
- image/ mode select grayscale .. discard other channels? click OK
- image/mode .... convert back to srgb ( for further editing if this applies)
- tweak contrast to liking with curves (if necessary)
Simple & very clean results..
I will check the plugin you mentioned

Same photo as before. This is a section from a 25"x17" print. I am comparing it to my Canon 1D mkII N that gives very good detail at this size. The quality from the Leica is just as good. I know it is difficult to compare different pictures, but it does look very good. Looking forward to getting my hands on an M8.

Has anyone ever used the Silver Oxide plug-in?
I know it won some sort of award back a year or so ago...
Supposed to emulate the range of film better than other plug-ins

I would be a bit dissapointed if the M8 was "just as good" as the Canon 1D II ...... i read people claiming the 10MP DMR files are "better" than 1Ds II files(and in fact dropped the 1Ds II for the DMR some time ago) .... and anticipate the M8 beeing "better" than the DMR due to the M glass.
But we'll see ........... one picture is hardly something to draw too many conclusions from.

B&W plug in
B&W plug in
I have been using "Exposure" from alienskin.com, which allows you to choose from a large selection of filters that convert the shot to look as though it had been shot on various film brands. My favorite for B&W is Delta 100, which emulates Ilford's film. There is a normal and a grain-free selection for this film. It will also emulate various color films, from kodachrome to ektachrome to velvia, etc.
I also use PS CS2 and go to image, adjust, channel mixer, monochrome and then adjust red, blue and green channels. This method seems to produce the lowest grain, but I don't really know how to use it...just try different things until I get what I want.

My take is this: it is very difficult to simulate film with digital .. so i gave up on that.
On the R-D1 i get more "filmlike" B&W results (whatever that means) by choosing older lens-designs.
If i use the 50 asph lux or cron 35 asph .. the files get so unbelievable clean & crisp it looks digital, no matter what plugin i use .
With the pre-asph luxes or an older summitar or even Canon Serenar from the 50's you get a lot closer to a vintage B&W look than any plugin.
We have to see how the M8 handles these older lenses ... i have high hopes.

I hope you are right as I am trading my 1D mkII N for a M8.

This shot was still on beta firmware, in horrible lighting conditions. Given that I would call it pretty impressive.

I wonder if the woman in the picture knows that there are several thousand camera geeks poring over her image. And not seeing her, because they're too busy pixel peeping her individual eyebrow and eyelash hairs, and the lines in her lips.
A vote of thanks to the mystery woman. In a way, she's playing Venus to the M8's Botticelli.

There's a new issue of some magazine out -- I'm afraid I left it at my office, but I think it's the latest issue of Photo Techniques -- which has a lengthy comparison between the DMR and the 1Ds2 (and I think also the Olympus 4/3, but I didn't pay much attention to that aspect, because he quickly said that the 4/3 camera was out of its class.) The bio on the reviewer said that he was a well-known photographer who had work in several big museums, and also a PhD in physics from Cal/Berkley. The test seemed quite fair, and quite severe (he outlines his methods; he carried it to the extent of only wearing black clothing in a color-neutral room for viewing the tests.) In any case, the conclusion was unusual -- and that is, for all practical purposes, the two cameras tied in effectiveness; the 1Ds2 having superior resolution at large print sizes, and the DMR having much better sharpness and color. Neither held up to MF cameras, and after about 19x13, the quality declined quickly. Other odd bits: the Canon looked better on a monitor, but the Leica looked better in prints made on an Epson 9800. The DMR produced prints that were more three-dimensional, with more "pop." The Canon was a lot more flexible, but also a lot bigger and heavier.
But then he tried Leica lenses on the Canon, using an adapter, and said the results were amazingly good. That was apparently the best combo -- the Leica lenses were way better than the Canon L's that he tested. On the other hand, there aren't Canon-usable lenses at all focal lengths.
Interesting article. I believed him.

This is similar to most conclusions on the monster thread on the DMR on FM forums: Canon 1 Ds2 has slightly higher resolution but Leica DMR scores higher on photographic quality, even when using Leica or Zeiss lenses on Canon. The Canon forums on the Internet have many reports by Leicanon shooters supporting these conclusions as well. So yes- you are right to believe him.
And the M8 is supposed to surpass the DMR, not only because of advancing digital technology, but also because M lenses surpass R lenses in general.Happy days!
