I was under the impression that the MP was 100% mechanical and independant of batteries, which i would imagine would mean that it doesn't have a light meter.

thank you

It's mechanical, and does not need batteries. However, if you have batteries in it you get a light meter display.

so basically, its the same as a M6? all mechanical except light meter?

Keith, thanks I've seen that, just forgot it. I was in B&H on Sunday and tried the MP and frankly I wasn't overly drooling to replace my M6TTL. Perhaps an MP a la carte as a birthday present with some customization (including the chrome finish) will be a good treat, but functionality-wise and look-and-feel wasn't tremendously different. Just my subjective opinion.

Stephen does a good explaination of the design workings of the MP.

Having got both the M6 and the MP they feel quite different in operation.
My MP is much quieter and smoother to wind on the film. The meter is a little more sensitive. Rewind crank is entirely different and it's black paint over brass. Viewfinder doesn't flare either. Well worth the cash IMHO if you're going to be using the camera a lot in rough climates.

Beware

Beware

But make sure you're talking about the new MP, and not the old one, the first MP of 1956 with no meter!
Increasing the confusion, Leitz has released several special models as a tribute to the old version, with no meter: for instance the classic MP for China ( Classic MP ) or the MP 3 Edition LHSA ( MP 3 Edition LHSA ).
Is that clear? 😕

The MP 3 has a meter; only the Classic is without.

The MP has more brass innards, while the M6 is other stuff (steel, magnesium or zinc I think). The MP does not have TTL flash metering, and is the same size as the M6 classic (a little shorter than the M6 TTL and M7). The viewfinder is multicoated and less prone to the rangefinder patch flaring out. It was (and still is in a la carte) available in .58, .72 and .85 VF magnifications. It does have a nice and accurate meter. I have found it to be slightly smoother than my dad's M6 classic, but it is a minor difference. It is noticeably heavier. The rewind crank on the MP is like the M3. Other than that, the differences are cosmetic.

If I could afford it, I'd replace my ZI and M2 with an MP a-la-carte in a heartbeat. I'd go with chrome finish, .58 magnification, and I'd go with the simplified viewfinder with only 4 frames instead of 6.

I mean, it really wouldn't do anything that I can't do now with what I already have, but it would be really cool! 🙂

kyle, you are worse than me!!
changing loyalities in a heartbeat...

😉

I love my ZI, but an MP would a dream! I think the camera I described would have the best qualities of the ZI (uncluttered viewfinder, etc) with the beauty of the Leica. Best of both worlds!
