Hi Folks,
My M8 arrived from Tony Rose this week. Great customer service.
However: I'm disappointed by the loudness of the shutter wind (i.e., the sound, after the click, of the motor preparing the shutter for another shot) on mine, which is louder and whiney-er than others I've heard online. I'm wondering if they all sound like this or if mine has something wrong with it. Mind taking a listen? Does yours sound like this?
Thanks,
Ben

Jaapv: Thanks, but that doesn't answer my question. I'm asking if this is how the current version is supposed to sound.

Perhaps slightly louder than mine, but not really. There's no getting around the fact that the M8 is louder than a film M. You get used to the sound and, in my one year of using the camera, except in the quietest I haven't experienced any problem with the shutter sound being _too_ loud. It's much louder in your ear than as experienced at the distance of your subjects, however. That said, I'll probably shell out for the upgraded shutter.

Maybe a little bit louder on the high pitch end compared to mine. Maybe you could take it to another leica dealer and compare it to ones they have in stock. It's really hard to tell with a sound byte.

It does sound much louder than mine. What I noticed though with mine is that after about 100 shots, it seemed to get a lot more quiet. Obviously, this could just be that I was more used to the sound by then. The M8 remember is louder than the M6 and M7 if by some chance you were comparing the 8 to these.

Hard to tell from a wav, but it does sound similar to my M8. When i first started shooting mine, I was apalled at how loud the motor was, but I got used to it. Also, for what it's worth, it does seem way louder indoors that it is outdoors...

I noticed this too and equally wondered if the sound actually changed due to the shutter wearing in a bit or if it was simply my ears and habituation.

Sounds the same as mine (allowing for my computer speaker) etc. etc. The only sensible thing to do is compare it with another directly. You say "great customer service". Surely you tried one out before buying? This should not be a suprise. Go and take some pictures. That is the most important thing.

A bit louder, but I have found that mine has become quieter over the past year of ownership. It is also louder to you as you are right next to it. Most further away do not notice it as much, especially in normal shooting conditions. In a really quiet room, you will hear it easier, but it is quieter than my D200, F3, R8 and R4SP cameras.

Several people on the forums have mentioned that they felt that the use of a half-case on their M8 helped to dampen the noise a bit. Mine in its case, has the same sound pattern, but it is hard to tell the volume over a computer speaker.

I went by Calumet. The one they had on display there was about the same volume, but not as high pitched.

I don't own one but have shot one in a camera store. Of course, it's hard to tell exactly when you can crank up the volume to any level on a computer, but yours seems to have a "buzz" thrown in that I don't remember when I shot the demo unit.

I wonder if they have released Leica M7D. Cloth shutter and manual winding. It is like epson rd-1s!!!! Will they sell a lot more????
I believe epson is making Rd-2 with full size sensor right now.

Well, it’s only slightly different in pitch but the overall rhythm and relative noise level is the same as mine. If it were sitting on a hard surface or being hand-held near the microphone is likely the only difference.
