Does your DS IV behave like this?

I have this issue since I got the scanner and allways ignored it or photoshopped it away but now´s the time for more serious investigation!

When I scan a negative color film with blue sky in the frame the scanner allways shows this light stripes paralel to the long side of the negative. I suspect the S/N ratio of the CCD is the reason (since light blue sky equals high density in the negative). Examples are below.

A friend of mine gave me the tip to try vuescan and to bump up the Exposure value (in theory making the S/N ratio bigger) but all the settings from 1 - 11 are showing no effect and the stripes in the sky stay the same!

I then tried multipass but saw no diference either!

On all other types of Film (slide/ bw) I didn´t notice anything like that and it only happens in large light blue areas in negative film.

I´m tired of this behavior since I have 40 Rolls of Agfa U100 waiting and it´s summer and I love bright blue skies in my pictures!!!

Has anybody the same problems with this scanner?? Any fixes or sugestions maybe?

Pictures: The vuescan picture ($) is scanned at 3200 dpi, long exp. pass on, exp. +9
The minolta pic is scanned at 3200dpi exp +0.6 (this is just Gamma I think), 8x multisampling

HELP!!!

No, mine never does this. I scan mostly color negatives and it gives clean solids, including the skies. I've heard of "banding" in some scanners, but this one has never shown it.

Is yours still under warranty?

I have never had this problem with my SD IV. I have scanned both print and slide films, using just the plain vanilla software included with the scanner.

you can get rid of the dollar symbol buy paying for vuescan :D

Seriously, on occasion even vuescan will have the "streaking", or banding on some of my scans. Eject the film holder and hit the "calibrate" feature under "Scanner" , this seems to work for me.

good luck,
Todd

Yes, this has happened to me, but showed up as a light white band in the sky, and this was with b&w negs. When I looked at the neg carrier the negs were slightly out of position; they were a tad too low and there was a clear line above the exposed part of the neg that was being scanned. Once I centred the neg and ensured that only exposed film was being scanned it went away.....
This was only one band though, not multiple ones that you show.

these are machine processed no? Looks a bit like uneven roller contact and therefore uneven development. And is, naturally, most apparent where there is a large area of solid or gradient color. Are they always going lengthwise along the negs?

Have you printed the negs to confirm that it's really the scanner? I had something similar happen a few years ago while travelling and it was on the negative. Camera was a 3f and it only happened on the one roll. At the time thought it might be x-ray fog or uneven development as I was not scanning negs back then. No longer have the 3f so not sure if the problem was shutter related. Would be curious to know which camera is doing this. Will attach a shot to show what I was getting.

I've never seen this kind of banding from my own DS-IV. I'm also very inclined to believe, like others have pointed out, that the source of this may very well be the negative.

The light of this scanner is very, what's the word, "collimated"? (the opposite of diffused) and will accentuate and aggravate any defects on your negative, including grain, scratches, lost spirits, and the elusive Graviton. OK, so I'm laying it down thick, but my point is that you'll see things you never thought were on that negative by just inspecting it on a light table.

If you have a friend with another DS-IV, I'd ask him to scan it exactly as you have.

And...err...yes, those $ signs can be taken care of with a few $$ ;)

Hi all and thanks for the great response!

unfortunately thats no good news for me since it means that my scanner is defect! (and I´m over warranty  )

As regarding the errors with negatives and processing, i can cancel that out unfortunately since the prints from my lab are allways very good and I get the same banding with every negative I scan! (also I´ve scanned negs processed by different laboratories and it´s allways the same)

Thank you all for your help!
I guess I have to keep it thou because prices on Ebay are so low that another scanner is not in reach when selling it.... I have to hope that it doesn´t get worst and to shoot slide film for color (fun with unmetered cameras) well...

Hey, let me know if you get one or not...I'm still waiting for my Coolscan 5000 (it'll be another week), but I get the feeling I will be asked to give the DualScan the boot.
