domke 803 vs the 5xb

I used to own a Mamiya 6 and had a Domke F-3X which worked really well for it. It's a nice bag (and a nice camera) but I decided to bail both and get a Leica and now I just use a cheap Kodak bag made for a digicam either on it's own or inside another bag when I need to carry more stuff.

The F-3X has a good amount of space and is easy to work out of and it doesn't look like a photo bag, necessarily. The canvas version, especially when washed looks pretty non descript and doesn't scream "I have an expensive camera in here".

Like MacAuylay, I too have a hadley. I use this most days and it's very well made and nice to the touch. I've had this a number of years and it still looks new. Having said that I don't throw it around. The insert has been used only about a dozen times as I tend to carry my RF camera in a wrap or zing case inside the bag. This leaves even more room should I need it. Have started to use the insert more though when using it to carry my new D80 and lenses.

I have a 5xb too which I bought from a member here which gets used occaisionally.

I would however pick up an 803 or clone at the right price, even used, to use as my everyday/not always shooting type bag, if that makes sense.

What do I look for when searching (perhap ebay) for closed cell foam? My diaper bags could use a little help in that area. While they have something for insulation, it does not protect from bumps and grinds and such.

Campmor offers rolls of foam padding, ususally the sort made for placing under sleeping bags. You can get a roll for ten bucks and have enough for tons of applications/projects.

i bought a used 802 (thinking it was the smaller bag) and now use it as a daybag. it seems very big but carries a camera or 2 and lots of stuff.

i had a billinham s3 bag, very nice. sort of the british domke 5xb.

And that has become my favorite bag. Size-wise, I think it is a little bigger than the 5xb.

i don't care for the style.
i had an af4, i think it was, and didn't really get along with it well.
i like the satchel types for how they stay close to the body and don't stick out so much. i already have a natural outgrowth so to speak😉!

For a really small bag

For a really small bag

Check out the Lowepro film organizer. It has three interior compartments, an external zippered compartment and a built in rain cover. I have carried my R3A with a lens mounted and two more lenses. There was even room for a couple of rolls of film. It doesn't offer a lot of protection, but it does have a larg capacity for its size. All that is needed is a shoulder strap or a belt.
