I'm thinking that I have enough little cameras to get a Domke F2 or F6 again, and I do like shooting out of that style bag better than the satchel or courier styles... but which ones are deep enough for the upcoming iPad I will invariably get? Or if I just slip into the back pocket of an F2, it should only stick out a little bit - how does that work out?
If you carry a tablet in the back slot, have you had any problems with it slapping around, hitting your hip and being damaged?
The F6 is not tall enough for an iPad.
The F3 is, I think. I'd have to unload all the crap in mine to check ... !
However, the overall shape of a tablet tends to push you into a satchel shaped bag.
My favorite bag that can carry iPad plus Leica / GXR / typical mirrorless and other RF style gear is a satchel type: the "Oskar's One Day Bag Mark II" from Photovillage.com (it's almost identical to the Artist & Artisan ACAM 7100 but just a tiny bit roomier and with slightly better zippers, a permanent memory card/battery pocket, etc.).
For a *LOT* more space, the Tamrac Mini Messenger can handle a four lens SLR kit and up to a 13" MacBook Pro. Way more than I typically need for RF and mirrorless gear, but it remains a light weight and very easy bag to work out of.
To spec out a bag, the iPad 2 is 7.5 x 9.5 x about 3/8 inch in size, so you want to find a bag which has about 8x10 inch inside dimensions.
I wouldn't put an iPad in a bag's back pocket, particularly an open one ... that's a great way to accidentally drop it and it *will* bang into your hip a lot. For comfort, I put the iPad inside on the other side of the bag so that the back of the bag can conform to my side, back, etc. If you get a bag with a single large open compartment and toss a bunch of other stuff in too, it would be easy to get one of the side opening iPad sleeves (Rickshaw Bags, many others have them) to protect it inside the bag without taking up too much room.
Check out also the Tamrac Zuma line. The Zuma 2 for a compact camera and the Zuma 4 for more room might there for you.
The Billingham L2 ("Alice" in some markets) also has a nice large front pocket that an iPad 2 with Smartcover fits in. It's a little tight on the height and needs a little padding on the bottom, but otherwise works ok for a modest sized bag.
