Don't be ugly by accident, or: better gear makes you attractive!

Today I ran across a rather funny tongue-in-cheek analysis of portrait photographs on a major dating site. ("Don't be ugly by accident!")

Basically what they did was to have users do a few million 1-1 comparisons which picture they found more attractive, and then correlated that with the EXIF data, to make statements about how attractiveness is influenced by gear. (Disclaimer: don't take the statistics too seriously, and I guess since it was the site operators themselves doing the analysis, it was probably permitted by the terms of service of the site.)

Anyway here's a few photographic highlights:

- Flash makes you older by 7 years.
- Fast lenses make you more attractive.
- More complex cameras make you more attractive.
- Leica is better than Canon, which is better than Nikon, but Panasonic is better than Leica.
- iPhone owners have more sex partners than BlackBerry owners, who in turn have more than Android phone owners.

People who are more likely to be participating in middle class culture are more likely to have the newest of whatever is the rage and also more likely to pose and groom themselves in a way that is view as "attractive," by other middle class people. Like how the guy is hot in his BMW but ugly without it.
