Don't flaunt your vintage camera on the plane!

I was watching some show last night and saw what happen, unbelievable the guy just pulled out his camera
and everyone went nuts, it really show the world we live in now. Some people need to take a deep breath and
calm down.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe that as soon as the "B" word is mentioned on a plane rules and procedure come into play that overrides what the crew thinks or observes. The situation becomes one of getting the plane down safely ASAP and then sorting out the details later.

Yes, it is possible procedures are established for the evenience.

There’s a strong force working behind the scenes in western societies to maximize the security state at the expense of personal freedom. The main operational currency is FEAR. Maximizing fear and uncertainty is how the security state works. They WANT people to over react, that’s what they feed on; otherwise common sense would prevail and the thugs would be relegated back to their role as guard dogs. You need guard dogs in a safe society, but you don’t want the guard dogs to run the show.

Was he swearing a lot while trying to use camera? Angry guy with black box and dials. Mobile phone for all converts don't understand frustration. He must have choose Nikon instead.

I feel pretty lucky right now. Just had a flight and I photographed out the window quite a bit. Nobody on the plane batted an eye, but security at Portland Oregon airport zapped my M9 for about 20 minutes in the x-ray machine. I watched them do the rotate views on screen, and I even called over to them and told them it's a camera. I was ignored as they scratched their heads and murmured among themselves. One, then two...then four of them trying to figure out what this thing could be. When fifth and sixth reinforcements arrived, one of them must have known it was a camera. They all relaxed and smiled, and joked among themselves,. The conveyer belt moved. My M9 sat in x-rays for 20 minutes..... couldn't be good for the sensor.

More recently, airport security held my Leica in the xray machine for about 20 minutes using the new 360 view to inspect, inspect, and inspect. After the 5th or 6th security genious arrived, it seemed all was OK and the belt moved on. I do hope they didn't damage my camera! That's a long time to sit under xrays. And, there's likely no recourse for damages. I was told that while you are in the "no man's land" of airport security, there is no liability for damages caused by security. Maybe someone here with a genuine legal education can elucidate or debunk that. Almost made me late for my flight and held up an already long line behind us.

Relax, they were just checking if it needed a fresh CLA. All in all it seems like you got faster turn around than you you would have gotten from DAG or Leica!

If the camera is indeed a Canon F1, I have a different theory: the woman is not dumb but wanted to get the photographer into trouble. People without any interests in photography can easily tell it's a camera (an SRL, that even in the age of digital and smart phones, is not uncommon to see being used by professional and amateurs sling around SRLs on their necks.)

I wonder of David ever had that sort of issue...............

Stupidity is the national pastime now in 'Merica. Sad but true.

Someone mentioned common sense above. That is an oxymoron. There is nothing common about it anymore.

Many years ago, there was a parking area near the airport runways where people would go and watch planes land or depart. Very recently I was thinking of going there to photograph the planes with my 553 ELX…

Good thing no light bulbs needed to be changed, that would probably have required 60 security apparatchiks.

Yep.

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

—H.L. Mencken

Yep.
The defining features of all "Karens"
- Zero introspection
- Small brain
- Big mouth
- Humungous sense of entitlement and undeserved self worth

At least in the US, "Karen" denotes an upper middle class white woman who weaponizes her class and racial entitlement against non-white service workers and Black men generally. There is a rather sordid history of white women needing to be protected from sex with Black men. This fear led to many quite innocent flirtations and even consensual sex being framed as rape, often resulting in the man being tortured and murdered by angry mobs. This history informs how the unique position white women hold in society both allows them to be societally disadvantaged compared to men, but in certain contexts they do have power over Black men by merely invoking fear of the Black Brute. A good example is Amy Cooper attempting to call the police to have Christian Cooper (no relation) murdered by the police in the aviary in Central Park on 25 May, 2020 after he merely asked her to follow the rules about having dogs in that area.

None of this is to suggest that Black men are incapable of violence towards women. But this protective instinct towards women is of course not extended towards Black women, nor women of other non-white races. And generally, sexual assault is one of the more under-reported crimes and convictions are rare, despite false rape accusations only being about 8% if memory serves.
