Down & dirty contact sheet

Found an old (15yrs!) sheet of 120 negs without a contact sheet, wasn't going to pay the lab $10 for one. So I created a white bgnd document in Photoshop (instant lightbox) and placed the sheet of negs on the monitor - they stuck thanks to static electricity.

I then snapped them with my Ricoh GX-100 set to macro. Opened the image in Photoshop then inverted it & voila instant (almost) contact sheet. I was surprised at how usable it was. Sure you could see the 'texture' of the LCD, but for a quick idea it was perfect.

Here is a reduced version - http://www.leshall.com/contact.jpg

I hasten to add that my lightbox is only a teeny 4x5 travel one otherwise I would have used that. I was looking around the office thinking of putting paper on a window etc I have a two monitor set-up with an old cheap LCD for my CS3 palettes etc and it happened to have a white bgnd. The idea would work much better with a decent lightbox.

Cheers. Les

Here's an inverted digital snap of a 4x5 negative on my lightbox, handheld. This is pretty close to life-size, too, on my monitor. A scanner is just a specialised digital camera, after all.

I just tried it with a 6x9 neg and it worked, but the monitor texture is a bit annoying. I will try to make a lightbox, or something similar to get better results.
