Download Adobe CS2 for Free!

Ah, the server is merely overloaded. Loads and installs fine now. Hard to tell whether it actually is free - owning a later version I am supposed to get free of charge downgrades in any case. But in the past Adobe support was unable to give me anything except for one version back from the current (which does not help given that parts of CS3 already refuse to accept Netbook size monitors), so this is an improvement even if it should turn out to be restricted to current version users.

Can anyone verify whether it is also accessible to people with older or no CS licenses?

It is totally free, you don't need a previous license. The server is under heavy load so you may need to try a few times...

The background: Adobe killed the license servers for CS2 some weeks ago, leaving all legitimate CS2 users stranded if they had to reinstall. Rather than upgrade them for free they decided to release CS2 - officially only for CS2 users, but it is perfectly obvious that they cannot stop it any more now.

Smarter marketing move than I expected from Adobe, just about anybody into stealing software already has a newer version of CS installed, so that this will reach the crowd of potential buyers (besides legitimate customers), and CS2 is outdated enough that many people will want to upgrade (if only because it does not support current cameras and OS versions) - into the (still unpopular) Adobe cloud services.

Note the system requirements: CNet article

I installed it on my Win 7 laptop and did not have to set up an account and it runs good.

I also installed it into wine on my Linux Mint 14 KDE machine. Working good there too.

The only negative is the newest version of ACR for CS2 won't open my raw files from my Olympus E-PL1 or Panasonic G10..

I open and process my raw files in RawStudio anyway and save a .jpg which will open fine in CS2..

Is there an upgrade path from this version of CS2 to the latest CS6? I only ask because it has traditionally been a two generation gap that can be jumped to upgrade, otherwise you need to buy the full product.

Certainly not - upgrade entitlement is tied to license keys, and these obviously are not registered to your name. As the license servers are history, even your own legitimate versions of CS2 perhaps cannot be upgraded any more, for technical reasons (besides the fact that Adobe does only upgrade up to two increments any more). Adobe will obviously know that the serials from this "free" release belong to this free not-for-retail version - but they may have lost account of past user registered serials.

I installed it on a 64-bit Windows. It works.

But you get errors during installation. The program wants you to load disc 2 and hungs. If you continue it will not finish properly, but somehow finally you will get it working anyway. I had to install it two or three times before it worked. The installation program did not like the folder "Programs (x86)".

It think it is a good idea from Adobe to let customers use old programs and get used to them before buying new ones!
