DP1...I think it's time?

I've been thinking about a Sigma DP1 for quite some time now, and of course waiting for the inevitable price drop. One source has them at around half the original retail price, and I have a feeling they won't go much lower - before disappearing. OK - they have a few drawbacks, but for what I want - travel, holiday memoirs, in the pocket of my jeans, I would not think too much of a problem. I'm attracted to that Foveon film-like look, and sensor size, and now the price, so would you nudge my hand on the button?

Definitely ... evening allowing for all the obvious short comings of the camera. I also really like what that fovean sensor does and just because the auto focus is a tad slow and and the write time before being able to shoot the next image is measured by calendar, so what ... I'd have one! 😀

I paid 120 EUR for mine recently. The camera is nice, if a little (read: dog) slow. If you don't mind that as a shortcoming, go ahead.

120 EUR?!? That's cheap indeed.

A friend has got one. If it is the sensor I don't know, but it makes stunning pictures. It is also a biatch to operate (dark text on black buttons, sigh) and is slow and has trouble focusing.

But if you have a bit of patience... the images speak for itself.

I have the DP1s and I love the colors it can produce. It is a nice camera but my only wish is that I had bought the DP2s instead (only b/c of the focal length). It is SLOW on the autofocus but the manual controls are nice and easy to use. I carry mine with me (in fact I keep it in the console of my car) and use it for whatever.

the foveon sensor is honestly one of the most gorgeous i have ever used!

that said, i gave the DP1 to someone on permanent loan as i knew he was a much more patient photographer than i. he, too, was stunned by the quality of the images, but he wants to give it back to me... he gave it one last shot, taking it on holiday, and ended up using his wife's cell phone for most of the trip 😛

and yet i have another friend who uses his DP2 and loves it and takes it with him on travel when he doesn't want to lug the Leica.

if you want a Sigma, i'd really recommend you going with the DP2. it does not seem to be quite so miserable a camera to use.

When I use my DP1, I use it in MF-mode, and I use it like it is a Contax G1 in MF-mode. Then it is fast to work with.

I have a DP2 and the images from it are fantastic. It is a frustrating camera at times. I am keeping my eye on the SD15 and the SD1 developments. The sensor is special...

Rather old thread, but I have received my DP1s last week.

And boy, I really like that lens/sensor combo.
With an SD9 and an SD10 (and also with an x530) the Foveon was not able to amazed me, but that little DP1s is a truly fantastic cam!
