hmmm, i wonder if that means that reviewers will start getting them any time soon. very curious to see how the new sensor works. you've also gotten me interested in the old sensor, gary, with your mentions of how smooth it is.

i guess sigma needs to rush it out before canon floods the market with cheap FF foveon sensors 😀

There are a couple of companies that have foveon like patents out.. I think the original may be running out soon. I cannot remover who the others are at this moment.

I wish someone would do a csc w/ a foveon like sensor. I was lugging my sd1m w/ two lenses around Mendocino this last weekend..

Let's see how it plays out in practice. I still have my suspicious reservations about the two interpolating layers on the Quattro sensor...

I have a strange gut-feeling that the full-on single layer interpolating- & cheating Bayer and X-Trans technology will be in the junkyard and only in photographic technology history-books after some 10-15 years, with everybody running cost-cuting (semi-interpolating) multi-layer sensors and righfully so - it's eyecatchingly film-ish afterall 😀

I just really hope some will keep making the true non-interpolating high-end multy-layers...

I think there is a company in China that modifies DP cameras for various mounts. They saw the original lens off, and put in a new mount ring. I don't think the procedure is doable with the merrill cameras, but the OG DPs are apparently hackable in this way.

The problem with those is similar to using wide angle RF lenses on an A7. Any short register lens that is not specifically designed for Foveon will have extreme corner vignetting caused by the angle of light rays. The natural falloff of fast lenses will also be magnified several times.

My guess is that in its current state the X3 is not really usable in a CSC, unless the flange distance be made as long as the SD cameras.

I am fine using Sigma native lenses. The art lenses are to me some of the better lenses out there..

The short flange distance should not be an issue if the native lenses is designed to work w/ the native designed lenses such as what they did w/ the dp family.

I think the Quattro should be fine for monochrome work. The big question will be color.. Everyone has said the look of the color image from the various versions of the foveon has a different look. The question I think it becomes a question of.. Do u like the look? My guess is that it will still be better than a Bayer or xtran based sensor in terms of overall iq.

So they're possibly making a small change? I can't imagine what that might be. But I guess it's better late and proper than on time and with issue. I'm excited to finally see the output. Maybe it'll perform better than the Merrill formula. But philosophically, I can't help but feel disappointed in a partially interpolated Foveon sensor.

Same here, looks to me they are abandoning their biggest strength instead of seeking help of more knowledgable outside help to get the processing and chippery done.

I wish Sigma does it right as they probably can't allow themselves mashups like big players can. And Foveon is the technology I don't want to see vanishing because of mismanagement.

I expect that used in monochrome, the new Quattro should not have any issues (or maybe just my wishful thinking 🙁 ). I agree that in color.. The verdict is going be out for quite awhile. I still plan to get the dp2q as soon as it is made available, since I mainly shoot in mono on the dp series anyway..

I must admit I'm pretty happy with my current Merrills warts and all ... and the new jigger will probably be a grand. That said I hope it is a success for Sigma because I really like the company. 🙂

Guys in Japan are going to c it sooner though.. End of June according to this. That's almost month and half earlier then we are going to c it. Anyone out there going to get it in June?

I'm sure I'm the only one who think this: The camera is just unsightly. I understand the minimalistic design, but there is a point when it will backfire. I can't say for sure not having handled it, but it doesn't look comfortable to use either.
