DP2M on the way.

One thing to bear in mind with these grips is that with the battery flap recessed aftermarket batteries can be hard to remove as they are a tight fit in the chamber. I good way around this is to carry a small lump of "blutac" or whatever it's called elsewhere, which will stick to the battery and pull it out easily.

It's probably a long shot but does anyone have an image from a DPM at ISO 800 or 1600 they could post .... preferably without any noise reduction applied. It's obviously going to be a few days or more before I get my hands on the little Sigma and I'm curious to see just how the noise looks at these ISO settings?

i'm at work and don't have pics handy but i've been very pleasantly surprised by iso800 b&w with the dp2m, it's completely usable and there's not much noise if you don't underexpose. i've also tried some iso1600 and iso3200 b&w - 3200 is rough, but 1600 is okay for me, it has lots of digital "grain" but it's pleasant enough. noise is very subjective, though, so pics would help.

eta: here's one at 1000 from another site: http://www.getdpi.com/forum/486992-post1403.html
another at 1600: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/42220995?image=0 this one mentions smearing in SPP, which, now that it's mentioned, i have noticed but wasn't sure what it was. not in all photos, though.

Keith,

Try here. Lots of other images at low ISO as well.

Here u go Keith. I have been meaning to do this post anyway... Quick hand held shots from today.. Nothing special, just picked something that was easy to show color bleed as iso got higher.. ISO 200 to 6400. I did not use any of my normal punchy processing in these shots that are posted. The shots are made using mid size raw (around 22-23mb each), converted to tiff16. Noise setting in the sigma raw processing sw was set at -2 for all three noise values. The b&w were converted from the tiff16 using Silver FX Pro2 - high structure/smooth setting.

Also note that if u use large RAW instead of mid size as I did, I have seen about 1/2 to 2/3 stop improvement in when the color fringing effect starts showing up. I used mid for this test since this is my default normal raw size.. I tend to switch to large when I think the subject matter warrants it.

nice, gary. it's interesting how foveon color goes absolutely insane at high iso. good thing it's so good at low iso that we ignore that, lol.

Oh crap...

I do not need this camera...I do not need this camera...

Been looking at this for weeks now. The only thing holding me back is no real long exposure, bulb speed. Would love to use this for just low ISO, long exposures.

Some additional info. The iso 1600 pictures using noise setting in Sigma raw processor of 0 and +2 values...

ISO 1600 f8 noise setting at 0 instead of -2 for all three noise settings

A lot depends on subject matter, but what I shot, I knew it would cause fringing issue as iso got higher. I general, use iso up to 200 for best results. Depending on subject matter 400 is ok, 800 is pushing into issues where it is better to go b&w. I don't tend to use iso higher than 1600 even in b&w.

I have three custom setting w/ this in mind.

C1 - mid size raw - auto iso up to 800 - aperture priority - f5.6
C2 - large size raw - auto iso up to 1600 - aperture priority - f2.8
C3 - large sie raw - auto iso up to 200 - aperture priority - f8

No problem.. It is what it is.. Don't know why people not want to show where the issues are... I have the Fuji x series, but I am becoming addicted to this camera. If u shoot the type of subject matter this camera works well w/, u got a match made in heaven :D

Hope u like it and post to the dp foveon image thread..

Thanks for posting this, Gary, I totally forgot about the custom modes. I've been changing the settings back and forth for color/b&w with the Qs button, it'll be much easier (and less error prone) to just set C1 etc.

Thanks for posting those examples Gary ... really interesting to see how the sensor behaves at higher ISO settings. 800 and 1600 will be very good for black and white for me I think ... the noise from some sensors when files are converted to black and white has always appealed to me, depending on the camera/sensor of course.

My D700's files at 3200 and 6400 produce very pleasing monochrome images IMO.

I don't actually like the look of the noise from the new Monochrom at high ISO though ... it has a real grittiness that dominates the images from the examples I've seen.

No problem.. Been thinking about posting this anyway .. As part of the finish up for the initial thoughts on the dp2m thread. U just got me off my lazy butt :D

When it comes to dynamic range and high iso, the canon and Nikon full frame dslrs along w/ what I have been seeing from the new Sony rx1 are in a different league.

For me having max iso look good at 1600 is all I really need for my normal shooting experience. The Fuji xp1 is good up to 3200 and that is more than enough for me given I can put a canon rf 50f1.2 on it if I really need the light gathering.

Good luck w/ it
Gary

The q settings are nice, but it still requires several different settings..sometimes i forget a setting... let that happen a couple of times before I decided it was time to setup some custom settings. Now I use the q settings for fine tuning instead.
