DPI scanning resolution for 35mm to print on Epson 7900/9900

Can anyone tell me what DPI I should scan to do the biggest prints I can on an Epson 7900/9900 (my library has both, and it is CHEAP). I can do $3 a square foot so....

35mm, I think we have up to 4000dpi scanners at the school. I will have to check on resolution and sharpness, but with my Contax G I am fairly sure I can go pretty big. Any suggestions on how big off of 160asa film?

The limit in resolution size for the printers is at 2880 x 1440 dpi. Perhaps I do not understand and it can print 4000 dpi, or higher?

The biggest file you could get out of a 35mm frame is 4000 x 6000 pixels on a 4000 dpi scanner. If you print at 300 dpi, that would give you a 13.3 x 20 inch print. If you print at 150 dpi, you could get a print of 26.6 x 40 inches. I wouldn't go any bigger than the 300 dpi print.

It would be of much help for you to understand the basic concepts of scanner resolution vs. printer resolution as they are only distantly related. There is a great tutorial at http://scantips.com/ It is now almost 10 years old but the basic concepts are unchanged.
