I'll be driving through the Rockies, Banff, and Calgary in mid-October this year. Then, I want to take the Going to the Sun Highway into Montana. My turn-around point might be Butte.

I'd love to get any suggestions for what to see, especially any festivals, rodeos, restaurants, museums, and/or book stores you've enjoyed in southern Alberta and Montana - in cities as well as smaller centres.

I've lived in Calgary, but I haven't been there since the crash in oil prices, so please also feel free to send any ideas about what's happening in Cowtown this October.

All thoughts will be very much appreciated!

Alberta in the fall is beautiful! We have a daughter in Edmonton and are heading back there right after (Canadian) Thanksgiving. Depending on the weather you could get to see some of the harvest if you get out of the city--mid October is usually a bit late but there will be some going on.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller is always a winner--plan to be there for a while, though. The Alberta Prairie Railway runs a steam train between Big Valley and Stettler; it's an interesting ride if you're into that kind of thing. Might be too late in the season for it.
 
Thanks very much for the reminder about the Royal Tyrrell Museum, LKeithR. It also brings to mind the nearby landscape in Dinosaur Provincial Park - which I hadn't thought of until your post!

At this point, I think I'll head west from Highway 2, to Nordegg. Then, I'll continue west to Saskatchewan River Crossing, and turn south, through the Park, to Lake Louise, Banff, and Calgary.

So I guess I'm looking for tips about where to shoot in southern Alberta - and in Montana, after I take Going to the Sun Highway.
