Dropped an M9 battery- ok?

Dropped an M9 battery today, about 4 feet, onto a cement sidewalk. Bounced once and skittered across the ground. A small rough spot on one edge. Anything to worry about? It's charging now.

We'll know when you put it in the camera, and it either works, or not. Hope it does, they are not cheap! Will the rough spot interfere with installing it in the camera?

I would only worry if the battery was still in your M9 at the time!

Hi,

The problem is that we don't know when your battery would fail anyway. Deciding would usually be done by watching the capacity and then deciding but the decision point is a variable quantity too. I've elderly batteries down to 25% of their capacity and they still work in some things and so I am loath to discard them. Mostly because they can be charged quickly...

So, in your shoes, I'd stick it in the camera and see what happens.

Thanks. Charged up, reads 100% in the camera, so I will see what I get out of it. Was one of my newest of course...

The rough spot is tiny, so doesnt cause trouble with function. Was mostly worried about leaking/fire. So far so good!

When the separator between the anode and cathode is breached, it causes a short circuit, which starts a process called thermal runaway that can lead to fire or an explosion when exposed to air.

If you haven't noticed any issues with heat when charging or in use your battery is probably fine.

FWIW, our evil technicians, in the good old days, used to throw a penny on to the battery terminals to get a loud bang and a hole blasted in the penny. In those days a cell was about 4 ft square and about 6ft high...
