I idiotically (fatiguedly) left my Canon P on top of my overcoat on the hallway bench last night; and grabbed the coat this morning, and sent the P clunking hard to the floor. This knocked the rangefinder off kilter and all day in downtown NYC I was shooting using the distance guide on the lens. Of course I want to get it fixed: I have come to love this camera above all others (for now...) Has anyone used Essex in NJ? I could drive there this weekend. Otherwise, who do you recommend for Canon repairs? Thanks....

I used Essex to work on a Canon P, and they did a super job with a quick turnaround—about two weeks.

Estragon: I can't wait any longer for Godot. Or for my Canon P to be repaired, for that matter.
Vladimir: At least you're not waiting on Leica Factory Service from Solms.

I am willing to wait it out for Godot, Lefty and the friggin' Ice Man but my camera is making my heart ache.

Thanks for the good advice all. I know DAG is great but the wait is supposed to be prohibitive.

Essex has worked on a number of my cameras (from a Bessa I folder to my trusty Nikkormat)....when you call they answer the phone.....when they give you a date they meet it and the jobs were done right. What else is there!!

Is it as simple as the RF alignment being off? Is it off vertically and horizontally?

I adjusted the rangefinder on my Canon P, it's really simple. There are threads about it here, and you can probably find it on a few other sites as well - but the procedure is easy. Vertical adjustment is done by unscrewing the "frame" on the round window in the front and then screwing the window (there are notches at the edge to help you). The horizontal adjustment is done by removing the screw just beside the viewfinder - there is a smaller screw beneath it.
