A few weeks ago I was moving house. In my car I had stacked in the front passenger seat, scores of DVDs in their boxes - slippery little suckers. And when I hopped into the car I placed my much loved D 200 with battery grip on top of the stack . Dumb. But I always have it with me and today was going to be no different. When I reached my destination I opened the passenger side door absentmindedly and had the top third of DVDs with the D200 slide sideways out of the car. Onto a concrete garage floor. Ouch. But much to my surprise all that happened was that the battery grip sustained a minor graze where it landed on its left hand bottom corner and the battery compartment door catch lost its little toggle thingy - the thing that engages the body to hold the door shut. Both batteries flew out of the thing and landed feet away and I thought that those notoriously weak hook things that hold the batteries in place were busted for sure. But no. So I went onto the internet and found a purveyor of Nikon spares and purchased the necessary bits for about 6 bucks. Two weeks later the bits arrived and the problem was fixed. A close call indeed. That D200 is really built as a pro camera. It weighs a lot with the grip and two batteries and falling about two feet (60 centimeters) or more is no joke. But touch wood it seems to have gotten off remarkably well from its little adventure. (I am still cautiously looking for further symptoms of internal damage but that's just me.) Perhaps as it fell the camera hit the bottom of the car's door jam and was propelled sideways somewhat - at least this is what the graze on the battery grip suggests to me. That means it did not sustain a full force vertical whack on the concrete. But in any case, I do not think I will try that again.

Who stole my light?
I dropped my nikon FE with a 35mm f1.4 attached from 5 feet onto concrete. The filter was shattered and i can't get it off, but the camera is fine and so is the lens, i just developed a roll from it today, still works perfectly. Love those things!
