Drum scan or 4x5 neg for large print ?????

hi, i have a 8x10 print i wish to have printed poster size, it was printed from a 35mm neg witch is long gone, what is my best option, have the print reshot with a 4x5 neg or a scan thanks in advance for any input. which method will look the best i know the quality will be limited

I've never tried having a 4x5 neg shot or a drum scan made from an 8x10 print, but I have scanned 8x10 prints on regular old flat bed scanners. I'd be kind of surprised if a flat bed couldn't get all of the detail out of the print that is actually there. The other methods might be overkill.

A flatbed at the highest DPI would be more than enough.
Also, I didn't even know drum scanners could scan things like prints. The Imacon X1 I use only works for negatives.

I don't think the Imacon is a "drum scanner" in the traditional sense. Drum scanners require mounting the film to a photo multiplier with some kind of oil.

If all you have is a print, then it's native size is as good as it will get. Shooting it w/ a 4x5, or even an 8x10 won't help. In fact, it will make it look worse. If you want to scan it, keep it around 200 dpi or you will have problems. Enlarging the print to a larger size will just cause the image to look less sharp than what you have now.

From any print, you are limited by the resolution of that print. It hardly matters how much higher the resolution of the scanner is.
