Hello all, sorry, a dslr question. My canon 20d just hit 50,000 shots this morning, as im told the shutter is made to last about 50,000 shots, mine isnt giving me too much trouble but im wondering if anyone ever had their shutter die from wearing out? I hope mine doesnt die anytime soon because 5D prices are still too high 😉

Avotius, just place the camera in a nice, dry place, give it an aspirin and check again in the morning. 🙂

Sorry, couldn't help.

If you had been subjecting your camera to extreme conditions, I'm sure the shutter would be on the verge of death. However, you don't seem to be too careless with gear, and since the shutter is probably electronically monitored but still with lots of moving parts, I believe it's good for these things to stay active and work. I simply wouldn't worry about it now. Oodles of used film SLRs with gaboodles of clicks in the shutter can't be wrong! 🙂

Keep blasting away!!!! 50,000 plus shots is like driving a car after you send in your last payment, you are getting your money's worth. Maybe the next time you are visiting a camera shop ask the folks there if they have ever seen a 20D with a failed shutter. Until your's goes, enjoy it.

How about 70%+ humidity year round, 45C summers and ultra wet winters? Bumping down lots of back roads, stuffed with dust, black body color wearing off in several places, and some rain. Not really extreme conditions compared to say...my fathers back yard back in washington but it does the trick.

It's a Canon - it'll be fine!
I've blown shutters on a couple of film Nikons and had to pay a couple hundred bucks to get them fixed.

I had to replace part of the shutter in my old canon ae1 once, took two tries to get it right, kind of, its still kind of funky. Replacing shutters is no fun, thats why I hope this doesn't happen here.

Thanks, I hope so, I remember seeing somewhere that the shutter in the 20D was rated for 50,000 and the 5d's are like 100,000, and the 1's something like 200,000.

fingers crossed...

At this point it has more than paid for itself. If it does give out before you can afford a 5D, you could probably pick up a used 20D with less use fairly cheap. It would be interesting to see how far beyond the advertised 50,000 shutter activations it can really go. Good luck!

I've replaced the shutter on my 300D, CDN $200- and it was done in about a day.

Otherwise, don't worry about it.

hehe I guess I will just have to use it more 😉

btw, 50,000 frames and maybe 50 were with that fast crazy 5 fps shooting mode thing, guess I need another 2 250gb hard drives for all this...

I still don't think the camera shutter will give out. These measurements are estimations. If your camera couldn't withstand the conditions you describe, it would have broken a lot earlier.

Take care and worry when the problem comes! 😉

"...At this point it has more than paid for itself...."

Against the equivalent in film is what I'm guessing you're alluding to. What about in percentage of "keepers"?

I say service it. If you really like the camera and if it's failing.

If you see it as just another disposable product, what else is there to say?

BTW, I thought the shutter for the 20D was good to at least 100K cycles. The 10D was, if I remember correctly, and had a slightly less robust shutter than the 20D does.

I wouldn't get it looked at... when the shutter goes take it in then.
I had one Mark II that needed a new shutter, digital chip and motor drive thingy.... it was well below the reported numbers that it should go... Canon cut me a deal on the repair work since it was my first Canon gear since swithcing from Nikon.

Show it pictures of all the young cameras waiting to replace it. That should motivate it to keep on going. ;-) Geez, 50,000! Are you a professional photographer?

As I recall the 50,000 limit is a conservative estimate. Based on the various factors mentioned in the other posts it may be very conservative.

Best Regards,

Bob

50,000 pictures on film would cost a lot more than with digital for sure.

As for keepers, YMMV, but even though I only have a few thousand digital images, I find my percentage of "keepers" is about the same.

I got plenty of keepers 🙂

A couple recent keepers

I'm somewhere over 75,000 on my lowly 300D.
Maybe I'm on borrowed time...I don't know. I do know I bought it to shoot hell out of it and that's what I'm doing. When it dies, I'll sell it for parts and move on.
