Hi,

Does anyone has experience with using dSLR wide angle zooms on the NEX APS-C bodies? I have NEX-6 and NEX-3, but the wide angle zoom option in e-mount is very limited and bit expensive. In Nikon F mount for APS-C format, there are at least 10-20 Sigma, 12-24 Tokina, 11-16 Tokina which are very very good. My use case is mostly for interior design.

Since some people complain about adapted wide angle fixed focal length lenses on NEX mirrorless, I'm wondering if you noticed even more problems with wide angle zooms.

Thanks,
Zheng

The only real issue you'd have to watch out for is the ability to manually focus and control aperture--some lenses, such as the Nikon G variety, do not have an aperture ring.

That's only when using short flange lenses from film cameras like rangefinder lenses. If a lens works fine on a digital SLR camera, there's no reason why it shouldn't work just as well when adapted to a Nex.

The best dslr wide angle for aps-c is the Sigma 8-16 bar none.

DSLR lenses on the Nex are good, as they are retrofocus. Unless you're invested in Nikon and have an ultra wide angle lying around, look at a lens in Sony A-mount - it is the cheapest way to get complete integration. And there are options plenty too.

But apparently the Sony 10-18/4 is quite good and it is cheaper then the Sigma 8-16 if you have to count in an adapter (however, if you also use a DSLR, I would go Sigma).

Samyang also has some newer and interesting ultra wide options made for mirrorless:

12mm f/2 (available):

10mm f/2.8 (upcoming):

There are photo samples in those links as well.

If you're doing mostly interior design work, you might wish to at least think about a shift adapter.
I've been using a shift adapter ( not cheap - about $100 ) with both a contax zoom and VC 15mm on a 5n, and it's been very useful with perspective correction. Not DSLR lenses, true, + everything reverts to manual.
And if I was more clever, I'd possibly achieve the same result with software.

@philipaloft: could you please give me a link to that shift adapter for NEX? I'm quite interested. I have done a little bit of large format in the past.

I just looked on Ebay and the same type I bought is still listed.
Search on Ebay for Kipon Contax Yashica C/Y lens to Sony E.

Around $120 and I thought well made.
I use the grid on the Nex viewfinder to help with alignment.

As you'll appreciate, the coverage of the lens is large enough to accommodate the shift because of the 2/3 sized sensor. I can crank the shift beyond the comfortable coverage of the VC 15mm.
