OK, I know this is a really dumb question, but I don't really know much about the French language, and I've never heard his name actually mentioned (only read) so I have no idea how to actually pronounce Henri Cartier-Bresson. I'm sure I'd sound like a dumb American if I were to say "Hen-ree Car-tee-er Bress-uhn" 🙄

Thanks in advance for curing my stupidity!

There's a few things photographic that I have yet to know how to say. Even some things that I commonly type on forums and know a little about, such a Rollei.. I have no idea how to say that. Or Robert Capa, I've always assumed is "Cap-ah". Is that right? There's a slew of others I can't think of right now. Maybe a side effect of learning all these things in print and on the internet, instead of actually conversing about them? I found a pronounciation guide for photography gear one time on the internet that was very helpful when I was trying to figure out how the heck to say Summicron 😀

or thats how a few years of french GCSE taught me to.

that said, I pronounce Rollei - Ro-lee, and such Leica seemed like it should be Lee-cah not Lie-cah.

Darkkadvenger,

My thanks! I marvel at such info now available here. Live from Prague to Paducah! Boggles the mind as least to one as old as I.
Again, thanks.

Thanks for the help.

Another one I alwasy mispronounced was vignette. I would always pronounce it vig-net, until I found out its pronounced vin-yet.

heh...that reminds me of being corrected by my mother after telling her I went to the fizican instead of the physician...I think I was about 20 at the time...lol.

"Ok, now I'm lost. Next time I am in a fancy camera store I will just ask for that really expensive German camera and I should get what I am looking for."

YEAH! And you might even get one that's better than a Roll-eye.

I've always heard Ondray Ker-TESH

Capa was not Capa's real name; his given name was Andrei Friedmann. His brother's name was not Capa either, and Cornell Capa pronounces it Cah-Pah.

Szarkowski, of course, is an American name, and is pronounced like all American names: Tzar-cow-ski, with just a barely audible "t' before the z, like in Tsar.

Really? Would that be a Deneh (Navajo) name? Or perhaps of Huron deviation? (And I always thought is was European.)

😱 😱 😱
I've heard how on the BBC they pronounce "Champs Elysee" like Champs Ayl-EE-say and Jacques Chirac like "Jack's ShEE-rack" ::shudder::

I know on the other side of the pond they shudder on how we pronounce things too, so the Universe is all balanced 😉
