Here's me, merrily making scans to judge the combo of M2 and J-8, because I haven't made my mind up on the 50p Jupiter and also I'm pretty sure that the RF on the M2 is a bit out.

This is despite the fact that when I was sleeving the negs I was thinking: "If I scan tonight they'll be rough proofs and I won't be able to be too critical; it'll take a few days under my IVP dictionaries" - big heavy things for those who aren't familiar with them - "to flatten out that cross-strip curl."

Is a flatbed, you see.

It's hard to identify the point of focus in a scan, or judge sharpness, say, if the scan is out of focus :bang:

As it is, I have a feeling both the lens (on my Bessa R) and the M2 are coupling not-quite-right.

Do you have a loupe?

You need to get the RF on the M2 calibrated with a known good lens.

Then you can proceed to shim the J-8.

I used a Summarit 5cm F1.5 and Nikkor 5cm F1.4 to get the RF on my Canon 7 dead-on.

Then I proceeded to fine-tune three J-3's ALL OVER AGAIN!

I've been fooling with Epson flatbed 3200, trying to squeeze out more sharpness from 120- 6X9 (Nikon for 35). I'm using one of Doug's carriers with anti-newton glass. Pressing the film with the AN glass makes it flat, and sharper for sure...and it ensures extra pleasant hours dust spotting.

Then you can proceed to shim the J-8.

No loupe, but an old Praktica 50 that serves the same purpose. However, the window is my lightbox, so not tonight 😀

The M2 will be going out for a CLA after Christmas, and to get a couple of other particulars checked out (weird behaviour of framelines - Malcolm Taylor offered two possible diagnoses over the phone, one would be a two-second fix, the other would be very expensive, you know which I'm hoping for). I'm trying to figure out if it's worth using until then. Head says stick with the Bessa until the M2 is spot on trustworthy, heart keeps trying to convince head otherwise.

And I'm just trying out the J-8 now, despite getting it off the 'bay months ago!

I'm using a 4870. I'd love a dedicated 35mm scanner, but I use 120 quite a lot also, and when the buying was done (and still) two scanners was out of the question. Most of the scans are for web use and small (rarely bigger than 8x10) prints, so I find it does fine.

I'm sure your 4870's better than my 3200, but I had no idea what I was doing when I got it and did learn a lot with it. It's fine for MF, but I really wanted to do big prints from 35, so it's gathered dust for a while..but I did want to play with 6X9 again because I have the camera and plenty of 120, which was also gathering dust...I figured it'd be good to see if I couldn't squeeze a little more sharpness from it...and I did..a little...but it mostly involved smarter use of Photoshop USM.
