Hello RFF,
I'm new to SLR's and I am unsure how normal it is to have dust/specks on the focusing screen. I just got my freshly CLA'd SLR (an old Pentax) back and it has several dark spots in the viewfinder... should I be annoyed by this or is it normal?

Sometimes this is just bits of foam that ended up on the screen, especially if the repairman had replaced foam seals throughout the camera (e.g. the mirror stop foam). If some canned air won't dislodge it, then ask the repairman to remove it.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose I will get used to it then. I tried using a blower but it looks like it is probably from the old mirror bumper that had gone sticky and is probably best left alone. Regardless it is quite a different experience using the SLR compared to my old zorki 1 with its "tunnel vision" viewfinder.

Are you sure it's on the underside of the screen? If it's some ancient crud that got dislodged and is now sitting on the top side, you may be able to blow it off by taking the screen out (beware of any shims that may come loose if Pentax used that system)

Getting a camera back from a "CLA" with spots in the VF is extremely frustrating!
