Out of curiosity, today I hand-held a Leica M 50/1.4 ASPH (same thing happened for my 35/1.4 ASPH & 21/2.8 ASPH) and took out my iPhone 4 and turned on the flashlight, pointing the spotlight from the rear side of the lens towards/through the front, and I was astonished - I saw many particles in the lens. When I said many, I meant thousands. And the interesting bit is that when I pointed the spotlight from the front, I don't see any. Everything shows very clean. But when I pointed the spotlight through the lens, it becomes horrible.

Advices needed. I will post 4 photos of my 50/1.4 here. All photos are photos of my 50/1.4 taken by my GRD III using macro mode.

1st 2 pictures was taken with the spotlight pointing in the same direction as my GRD III, i.e. to the front glass. From the photos, you should be able to tell that the lens are very clean, with no dust at all.

The next 2 photos were taken with the spotlight pointing from the rear glass of the lens towards/through the front glass. And there it became horrible. Looks like it's full of dust.

So what exactly are these "particles"? Dust inside the lens, or light reflection?

Thanks and regards,

Gary

Sparrows, don't quite understand what you said ... "^ what he said ... but ignore the fungus bit"? ... please kindly elaborate more ... please

Ferider, actually, if with bare eyes, both inside & outside are extremely clean ... it's absolutely nothing ... and even when the spotlight is pointing towards the front glass, it looks very clean also. The problem is when I point the spotlight from the rear glass, and then all these tiny little "particles" show up on the front glass ... they actually shine up, and I can see them from distance ... so terrible ...

Double Negatives, I've got the lens brand new for a couple of months, and I've only used them for a couple of times, and I store them in the dry box all the time. I don't think I can get so much fungus or dust inside the barrel in such a short period of time.

Besides, the same thing happens to my other 2 lenses - 35/1.4 & 21/2.8. All brand new of the same usage, but they came from 3 different retailers - Robert White, Leica Shop & a HK Leica authorized dealer. So chance that I bought a lemon is very slim.

Do not take pictures while a spotlight shines through your lens from the rear side then.

Your shots will be fine if you avoid this at all times.

Buzzardkid, I certainly understand this, and I understand a few dust on the lens won't affect the image at all. But I want to know what these "particles" are and what causes that ...
