After shooting a roll of film in a camera I was testing, I was glad I made the decision to bring the Nikon P7700 along. I'd always wanted to stop in Eagle Rock, VA to get some shots of the depot, and forgot there was an old iron works there too. Double bonus!

Eagle Rock sits at the base of Rat Hole Mountain, with the James River running between it, and Crawford Mountain. The cuts made for highway access open up the sides of the mountains to be able to view the folded topography that the Appalachian Mountain Range is made of. There are a lot of iron seams too, thus the proliferation of furnaces in the area (this isn't far from the Roaring Run Furnace I photographed last year). But once the mines out west opened up with their higher grade ore, and the seams started to be worn out, these small outfits lost their purpose, and were abandoned.

The furnaces at Eagle Rock though may be getting another lease on life as a tourist attraction, as someone has been clearing out the overgrowth that hid them for so long.

Phil--excellent, excellent shots! I really like the old depot--a reminder of the "good ol' days."
Are you still associated with the Transportation Museum?

Thanks, Paul. I'm still a member, but I don't participate in any events.
