I appreciate nostalgia as much as the next man. The problem is that you can't live in it.

Last night I saw a YouTube live concert by the Australian musician Ed Kuepper. In his most famous song “The Way I Made You Feel” he says ‘what we were saying for all these years was true, they never were the good old days as such’.

You not only can’t live in it, but the past also is very rarely better in any way than now, even if ‘the history of every individual, of every social order, indeed of the whole world, does not describe an ever-widening, more and more wonderful arc, but rather follows a course which, once the meridian is reached, leads without fail down into the dark’ (W.G. Sebald, The Rings of Saturn).

It's not about nostalgia but diversity. I feel "global village" is much more evident in last 10 years than ever before.
