Have you never heard of the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten? The academy was an initiative of Joseph Alberdingk Thijm, an art historian (professor of Art History) from the 19th century. He was the father of the well-known author Lodewijk van Deyssel. The Academy of Visual Arts was founded in the period when the Rijksmuseum was built. The imposing building is still there and is located on the Stadhouderskade, close to the Rijksmuseum. In 1876 Thijm became professor of aesthetics and art history there through the involvement of De Stuers. He was also the academy's first director. As far as I know, the Rijksacademie has been discontinued now, the institute as such no longer exists.

In the 1930s, there was a lack of living and working space for the professors at the Rijksacademie. A complex of studio homes for sculptors and painters was then built in the Rivierenbuurt, where Jan Wolkers, among others, lived. I live there myself since 1981. Jan Wolkers was a student of the Rijksacademie in the 1950's.

Erik, Yes, I have but did not recognize the 'Rijksacademie' as such. When the academy was closed, what did you do? I've read some books by Lodewijk van Deyssel and most of Jan Wolker's work but that was a very long time ago. You are a lucky man to live in the Rivierenbuurt. Groet, OtL

I had already been expelled from the National Academy for being stubborn. But the institute did not last long after that. It was a messed up mess.

Visual arts are very different from music. No one would dream of abolishing the Conservatory.

The Rietveld Academy still officially exists, but as a post-academic institute. The students have previously completed another study. Unfortunately, to achieve anything as a visual artist, you have to start young. That's why you never hear anything from the Rietveld Academy nowadays.

During my student days, I shared a house with someone who later became a well-known visual artist. He studied at the Academie Minerva and, later as an artist in residence at De Ateliers, in Amsterdam. Does it still exist?
