What is it around here? Why are people afraid to type "eBay"...? Why the ditsy twee euphemisms? "The auction site", etc.?
Is it like "The Scottish Play"?
Or Beetlegoose?
Someone please explain?
Regards,
Bill

if that firm does a web wide search to see where it's name is used at any given time, it will point to this site and the user member.

Well…. It wasn’t that Macbeth was considered unlucky, just that in local repertory theatre when a production flopped to get bums on seats the management often switched to Macbeth. As a consequence it was considered bad form or insensitive for the actors to talk about the play during the rehearsals for anything else. The bad luck thing is a misunderstanding as a consequence of that.

calling it "fleaboy" is also a gentle reminder to oneself not to expect to much and to be as cutious as you would be on the fleamarket.

People are stupid, that's all it is. There's no law against saying EBAY yet people are scared to do it. I asked this same question last year on the Olympus OM email list about EBAY, CANON, and NIKON. People there wouldn't properly write out any of thse names. Ebay was called O-Boy, Eboy, the auction site, etc while Canon was called C*non and Nikon was N*kon. No one really gave a straight answer why but some alluded to some fear of the companiessearching web archives and seeing the mentions of their corporate names. What a load of crap.

Some forums don't let users post the word "eBay," because they don't want people promoting their own auctions on the site, so people have gotten into the habit of not typing "eBay" on any forum.

To answer the OP, I find it quite understandable why they'd do such a thing. Writing Ebay is like doing some free advertising in a way, which is something they should earn rather than take for granted.
Come to think about it, ebay doesn't make or create anything, on top of that they bought number of online auction sites were separate entities( ibazar.fr for instance). It's a bit like a parasite or a virus that lives off an individual, then it spreads......... So they don't deserve free advertising

On photo.net it is not possible to post an ebay link. It is stopped, just like scam filters do.

Dear Bill,
I think it's just one of those words that is not used in polite company. Why not? Possibly because there are a lot of stupid c**ts around.
Cheers,

That's the most ignorant thing I have ever heard. It violates all logic and rationality. Why do one have to be stupid to know a stupid person? I know intelligent people too (not you) so I must be intelligent by your logic (I am, but not because of who I know). I know black people too but somehow I'm still white. I also know rich people, yet I'm not rich. I know talented painters, yet I am a terrible painter. I know an illegal immigrant, yet my family has been here over 100 years. Get the picture?

Oh, dear -- you saw through my evil plan.
That's why asterisks annoy me so much. People always think the w*rst -- which makes me wonder why they think of German sausages.
Ch**rs,
R.
