So I was searching for maybe a Leica lens and came across a nice 4x5 monorail camera in the same price range. I emailed the guy, since I really only wanted the camera back to fit to my older field camera.

Long story short here's his reply

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful there. After having another good look at it, just to check before I replied to your email, I started thinking maybe it’s a bit too cheap and have increased the price. I’m Sorry about that but the cameras been hardly used. Anyway thanks for your interest

Man! What the hell is wrong with people? You show interest and they jack UP the price???

What an arse**** .... makes you want to send the boys around to help him with his ethics. 😡

I would like to add though that I don't believe eBay is the problem here ... as there are these types of people in all walks of life ... eBay just seems like a good place for them to congregate!

That is despicable! Does ebay even allow raising of prices once an auction commences?

Regardless, the man's reaction is a terrible way to treat anybody.

This is not ebay. eBay, IMHO, is the best thing that has happened for cheap consumers. Because of eBay, just about everything has decreased 50% in value.

Get real, please.

As long as there are no bids you can make whatever change you want to. You can raise the starting price or lower it.

Keith, I think you censored the wrong word! 😀 😀

I wouldn't deal with him, no. But a lot of people have! A power seller with around 1900 feedback all positive. Crazy.

my reply

I'm sure if I had bid and then decided to change my mind you would not be pleased. I find it ethically mindboggling that someone could show genuine interest and you jack UP the price.

My last monorail camera was in new condition, more modern with 5 film holders, film, dark cloth. The lot. £150. Crazy to expect to put the price up, but your ethics are your ethics.

Good luck with the auction

So there we have it, by the way the item number is #120074372010 and the price is now about 1/3 higher than it was an hour ago!

You have handled it like a true gentleman Ash ... "every dog has his day." 🙂

Yes, Ash stated in the title that "Ebay just got even worse." I have no question he was referring to the eBay you are thinking of.

50% As opposed to what? and what happened to quality and assurance that the item you buy actually works? That has decreased 100%!

And Leicas are still bloody expensive.

Ebay has always been "even worse". . .

It is always proving to be a little worse than I thought, and it seems that its shadiness stretches on forever.

Bottom line is that it is infinitely rotten and evil, and that, although it may appear to be growing in nastiness, you are merely perceiving more clearly and thoroughly its existing ugliness.

NB23 is just jealous cos I can competently use an array of cameras 😀

Or maybe they're power sellers?

Either way I will NEVER stand by the bay and willingly defend it on anything. I was honest with auctions and got ripped off by buyers, and I was honest with sellers and they're trying to rip me off too!

No matter.

Just thought it was funny to share that experience with you fine folk 😉

(NB, I'm winding you up, I in no way advertise that I am a better photographer than anyone else on this forum)

The seller might find himself unwelcome after that. E-bay has bettter ethics than that.

A while back I ordered a lens for an FSU (Russian) camera, and somehow in the process my Visa info didn't get through. I then found myself being accused of not paying for the item, and e-bay had several things going, including trying to get my checking account number, which I refused to give them. Since that experience, I haven't ordered anything through PayPal, so maybe I should try one of these days and see if I can get through.

However, that is my first 'baddish' experience with them. I have several cameras I've ordered on e-bay/PayPal, and that is the first time there has been a hitch in the process.

Someone above questioned whether e-bay allows price increases after an auction "commences". I think you mean "terminates" - the whole auction process is arriving at a price. I can't see a seller increasing a price AFTER the auction ends.

In all honesty I'm confused 😕 according to the listing it hasn't been revised and doing a search for completed items shows it as previously ended early with a price only £4.00 less than it's current price 😕 Am I missing something ?

Screwy, it's a buy-it-now, possibly 'shop' type item, so the price can be altered without any reference on the auction.

The market will discipline this seller. It will be interesting to follow this auction. Do you have the eBay #?

David, it's on one of my posts in this thread.

Funnily enough another auction the other day I put £15 on and was outbid by £1, I get a second chance offer today! I'm no longer interested in that auction now, lol.

Why can't things just run smooth to begin with? 😀
