Exactly how does the short base length effect the Bessas. I know the longer lenses like the 135 at wide apertures don't fare so well from what Ive read, but what about normal lenses @ wide apertures? I have a bessa R and I'm wanting a fast 50 for it. I have a J-3 50/1.5 but wide open it's all out of focus. I know a thinner shim will help thanks to info by Brian & Kim. What I'm interested in knowing is how do the Canon 50's perform. I know one of the canon lenses is a sonner copy so I doubt I would be any better off with that lens than my current J3. I was talking with Memphis the other day & he said the Canon 50/1.2 is a great lens. That got me thinking how it would work with the Bessas. I have been looking at the voighlander50/1.5 Nokton. How is it wide open on the Bessas? I have a J-8 which works quite well but I'm curious about the faster lenses.

Roland (fereider) and LCT put together a very useful spreadsheet if you dig around that shows which lenses *should* focus on which various bodies. My experiences vary a bit, but the last published one is something I refer to occasionally when considering the Bessas. I will post the link when I find it again.

I use the CV 50/1.5 on my R3a wide open with no problem. The DOF is pretty slim at f/1.5, so be sure your subject is in focus. I have even used it on my R4. It was stopped down to f/8 and the subject was at a significant distance from the camera.

I don't know why I typed in Wide lenses when I meant normal, Maybe mod can fix this, but anyway you know my jist. This would be great to see a copy of this. I have trouble with the search. Maybe Roland has a link to it.

that canon 1.2 is large compared to the r body, might not be very comfortable.
the canon 1.5 is a perfect size for it though. the canon 1.8 would work also.
i'd get the cv 50/2.5 and use a faster film.

Joe I suppose your right about the Canon 50/1.2. I even read the Nokton 50/1.5 is a bit heavy. Isn't the Canon 50/1.5 a sonner copy much like the J-3? I wonder if the characteristics are the same wide open.
