Anybody have a suggestion for a cheap hood for the Nikkor 8.5 cm f/2? Doesn't have to look "period", just needs to stop photons.

Thanks.

How large a filter diameter do you need? I bought several metal hoods/stepdown/up rings, etc from Heavystar on eBay and the hood for the J-9 is quite nice. I think you should look at what he's got first, for a third party hood.

I bought a 48 to 49mm step up ring, and 49mm screw in metal lens hood from B&H for pretty cheap. Works great. And now I can use my multitude of 49mm Minolta and Asahi Pentax filters.

What is the diameter? I have often gone into camera stores to rummage through their remainders bins and have found nice hoods for a few bucks. 48-49mm was a very common size back then and you can often pick up hoods for medium tele lenses for no more than 5 bucks. I have not checked the "Bay" but would have thought he same goes for here too. Sometimes I have had to use stepping rings to make up the difference in size but that is a small cost too.

Nikkor 85/2s have a 48mm diameter. I use a metal generic hood in that size. I also have a step-up ring to 52mm so that I can share another generic hood with my 105/2.5.

I'd recommend a proper telephoto hood, which is more in the shape of a short tube. It looks more natural, and it doesn't intrude much into the viewfinder.
