Editing raw files in Ubuntu

I got tired of Windows XP crashing and switched over to Ubuntu. So far I like it.

The GIMP image editor is able to open the Espon raw files, but they are displayed as a thumbnail. If I try to zoom in, it becomes extremely grainy.

Has anyone tried using Ubuntu to work with the raw file?

I have not. However I believe the only raw convertor for linux is Dave Coffin's DCRAW. Google should turn it up.

There's Darkroom and UFRaw, both of which can be used to pre-process your raw files.

However, I mostly use Epson's very own PhotoRaw. With Crossover you can install it very easily. I rather think that WINE would be sufficient on its own but haven't tried it, having installed Crossover anyway.

Edit: just saw that the list of supported cameras does not contain the R-D1. 🙁

I run only linux, and I use those two methods:

- either run Epson Photo Raw with wine. Installation did not work with my version of wine (long time ago), but I copied the whole directory from a windows install (the one under Program Files), and it works perfectly with wine

- or use bibble 4. Unfortunately, the last version (bibble 5) does not support the ERF files so far. I hope it will be introduced in a future update.

UFraw should also probably work, but it is not very convenient to process lots of files at once. You can also use dcraw on the command line or in scripts.

Might be worth trying anyway, I see RawTherapee uses DCRAW as the backend, which seems to be a generic sort of library (they claim it's used in several proprietary RAW packages as well?). I wouldn't have thought they'd invent a completely new RAW format for each camera, and I gather the R-D1 is sort of a parts-bin model anyway.

I installed Darkroom, but it kept crashing. The image output was not very good. I will try Epson Raw using a windows emulator.

Just an update to the forum: I tried UFraw and it seems to be working ok. It has the basic features. Only one thing missing, I didn't see an option to remove vignetting. I will post a sample image out of it soon.

Here are two images 100% crop. the first one is the original jpeg directly from the camera. the second one is the processed image using UFraw and GIMP. these are not the best examples. But, I am pleased with the output. what do you think?

I am now trying to figure out a way to remove vignetting.
