I just returned from seeing an Edward Weston retrospective at the Hyde Collection a privately funded museum (free admission) in Glens Falls, NY.
There are just under 100 photos (original signed prints) on loan from another collection through August 13. The prints which range from 6x9cm to 8x10 in. contact prints are awsome in both their artistic quality and print quality. There is also a film from 1992 running in continuous loop featuring Cole and Brett Weston and Charis Wilson among others commenting on Weston's work along with examples and Weston family home movies of him working.
Anyone within reasonable reach of Glens Falls (NY State Capitol region) should not miss this exhibit.
For our foreign members who may not know where Glens falls is it is 48 miles north of the NY State Capitol (Albany) which is about 208 miles directly north of NYC.
The Hyde Collection is at 161 Warren St. not far from the center of town.

Thanks for the Heads Up, Kurt! I've been looking for some short trips to do this summer and this will do nicely. As a bonus for me, the drive from where I am towards there along rte 20 is pretty nice.

Sorry Jan, I was very tired. The exhibition is fabulous and my wife agreed and she was trained as an artist and sculptor. It spans photos from 1909 to his last in 1948. The film is also very illuminating as his methods are discussed by his sons and widow who was also his model as well as several others. His freindship with Ansel Adams is also discussed briefly. The pictures were obtained from several sources including his daughter in law.
In addition the Hyde Collecttion has an unbelievable collection of paintings by Rembrant, Rubens, Tintoretto, Renoir, Degas and many others of equal or lesser fame. The museum was established by the daughter of the co-founder of the Finch Pruyn paper company in Glens Falls. She married a Boston lawyer who later became the president of the company (marry the bosses daughter eh!) and they annually traveled Europe and bought up these masterpieces for the equivalent of getting a brand new MP with a Summicron lens for fifty bucks. Her husbands name was Louis Fiske Hyde and upon her death she bequeathed her mansion and its collection to a foundation which runs it today. Her only child, Mary married a Whitney of the Whitney Whitneys who are known for owning racehorces, established an art school and small museum in NYC about a hundred years ago and one of whose members owned the NY Mets baseball team until her death or just before it. Mary's son Louis Hyde Whitney is on the Board of Directors of the Hyde Collection and maintains a home locally as well as on Long Island. Coincidentally, Todays morning news stated that the owners of the Finch Pruyn paper company among whom are several decendents of the founders are attempting to sell the company. This should not affect the status of the museum.
Well, in a few hours, weather allowing I should be driving back to New York City for a few weeks, but hope to return intime to see this exhibit again befor it closes. I would add that the print quality is astounding in view of the photo materials available at the time. Brett Weston stated in the accompanying film that even though the negatives still exist, exact copies cannot be made as the print papers available today are very different.
Everyone who can should see this exhibit, it is well worth the trip. For me it is a 15 mile trip from my summer home.
Regards, Kurt M.

I should add that IMHO the Weston photos available in books do not especially in some instances measure up to the quality of the actual prints. A lot is lost in the book printing process.

Well I know what I will be doing in the next couple days

The Hyde doesn't advertise much. I learned of it in the weekly "The Chronicle".
