Dear Ed,sure, some of it is interesting. Most of it is not. From a homeowner perspective... it makes a neighborhood and business district look terrible. From a business perspective it drives business away. From a taxpayer perspective it costs lots of money (both governmental and personal) to control, abate, and correct. That's true even about "the good stuff" since locations chosen by the alleged artists is not always appropriate. That's how and why. Art and photography are important... but not that important.
This is indeed an interesting question. Arles is absolutely awash with graffiti, and people just leave it there, typically for years on end. Every now and then I think of moving there, and wonder how I'd feel about it. Overall, I think (I'm not sure) I could live with it, simply because everyone else does, and it's a part of how Arles looks. After all, once you're indoors, you don't see it.
So, although I completely agree that graffiti can look terrible, and often does, I can't help wondering how much is this down to some people getting really uptight about it, and how much it really matters.
Cheers,
R.

Though you have in fact just made a political statement. After all, a statement decrying politics is a powerful political statement...One reason I love forums like this is that they chose not to be political. It gives me a place to come and read about something I love and am passionate about without having to think about politics. Thanks RFF for keeping a clean enviroment for me to come and relax in, A big Thank You !!!!!!!

Guys, the graffiti question is more complicated than I made it sound, I agree. No one wants their home defaced . But a lot of graffiti here in Philly is often executed on abandoned sites (e.g. on the plywood used to board places up), and the use of stencils and appliqués takes it to another level.
Some of the street art in London is truly outstanding , perhaps the most memorable element of my visit last summer.

I'm glad the election is over, too. Now we can get back to important things, like whether the Leitz 50/1.5 Summarit has better bokeh that the Zeiss Sonnar of the same specification.
BTW, do you think it does? I only have the Summarit.

There are some Summarit lenses being offered at ebay right now. My copy has some internal defect (maybe) to make it like a soft focus lens.

Wow. I got my post deleted for saying that in the end Americans are more alike than not. Since (i believe) distinctions are largely manufactured, people should try to treat others with different opinions with respect.
What could be more political than that deletion.... Was that such a terrible thing to suggest?

I can't see anything wrong with these statements. It is polite to respect other's opinions... and sometimes it can even be educational.

No, it wasn't. I remember the post, and I wish it was really like that. There was nothing wrong with what you said.

unfortunately now days conservatives support billions in foreign military aid and interventionism..
used to be a time when non intervening govt did not automatically mean isolationism , aka trading with everyone.
Lol we still don't trade with Cuba it's amazing..
nowdays Rep and Dems are all same , difference is how much did it take for the politician a or b to sell their soul to the Corporation that financed their party..
