"The real trick to taking pictures is just to be patient and wait for them to happen" Great advice!

Thanks for posting the link. 🙂

So How Many Good Shots on a Roll?

So How Many Good Shots on a Roll?

Someone posted that a short while back, and I claimed to bat .500 on a good day. I like to shoot in series, it's photo journalism of a sort, you know, be a story teller. I was taught this in school, and it was part of a a film class I was taking also. It's a 35mm tradition.

The other thing to remember is that if you want a better batting average then go where the pictures are. If you cast a line in a vacant pool you won't catch fish. And similarly, be patient and blend in with the scenery.

My grandfather loved to sit on a bench at the ferry terminal in Oakland California just to watch folks come and go. I have taken up a similar practice, often taking up a little conversations with the folks I meet in public places. Then I ask them for their picture. I always remember those folks and their stories. That's why I shoot pictures: for my memory book of us.

Half of the photos you make are keepers?

I find him very unique for being funny, satirical, humorous as person as well as in expressing of what he sees; recalling Lartigue or Doisneau of some sort. He creates a caricature out of the usual and ordinary however by also knowing where to get utterly serious; an admirable talent, a very bright personality.

(A sad fact is that the ones who made Magnum the Magnum are disappearing slowly..)

He is inspirational and I think his simple, unpretentious playfulness is a refreshing antithesis to much of the over-thought conceptual work being produced today. He is also, IMO, rather more unique than initially meets the eye. He uses such a range of skills whereas some of the younger photographers in this genrea perhaps rely much more heavily on one approach, such as visual juxtaposition.

That's not sad that is just life - things change and IMO it is amazing that Magnum was able to renew itself with modern visionaries such as Parr, Soth et al.

Loved the video, btw.
