I understand there is a warning in the manual about collapsible lenses, even noting the 5cm Elmar and Hektors as a possible issue.
Unfortunately I do not have the little depth gauge to check the lens collapsed.
Can anyone tell me for certain?
I'm thinking about popping a rubber o-ring or two on the barrel so I can collapse the lens without damaging the camera, any guesses to how much I should compensate?
Might be a silly series of questions, and I could proly figure this out at home, but alas I'm out of town and away from the lens, my curiosity is unweilding.
Thanks in advance for any comments!

Well-known
For Leica M cameras
Dymo tape width: 9.5mm (3/8")
Apply the tape round the lens barrel, leaving a gap of about 1mm. To cut the right length first make a paper template.

So 3/8's is the magic number on the elmar?
I wonder where I could find out the lens depth tolerance for the RD-1, how deep can it go, Ide really like to get as close as I can :]
Edit: Looking on Cameraquest, Stephen states 20.5mm as the maximum tolerance, he also states that the later 2.8elmars only protrude around 19.5mm so I think im going to aim for that with my lens, we will see when I get home! Thanks

Hi B9
For what it's worth, I have a collapsible Industar 22 50/3.5, which dives safely into both the R-D1 and the Leica M9.
I know they're not exact copies, but the barrel length seems similar.

Supposedly only the Industar-10/Fed50 clear, but clearly that's debatable.
I have so nice O-rings that run around 3.3mm thick, I put 3 on, but am thinking of cutting one off.
Guess ill just place a bit of cardstock over the baffle and see how far I can go.
No harm no foul.
