Elmarit 40/2.8 anyone use one?

If I'm not mistaken, thats a lens that Leica decided to never put into production because it wasn't up to their standards.

I believe the comment on Cameraquest, or where ever it is says the lens isn't that good (well, up to Leica standards that is).

40/2.8 Elmarit-C This was intended as an inexpensive alternative to the 40/2 Summicron for the Leica CL. It was never officially sold to the public. A set of 500 numbers were allocated by the factory, from 2 512 601 to 2 513 100. As the factory finally decided not to market it, lenses already made were sold in 1972 – 1973 very cheap to employees of Leitz (Leica). Information provided by Mr. Horst Braun, Manager of Leica Repairs.

From the first book of Gandy,

I've seen them for sale from time to time paired with anniversary edition of CLs, but have not shot nor seen anything from this lens. The ones I've seen have gone for a pretty penny, which seems foolish given the quality of the relatively inexpensive 40 summicron.

Well, it is a collector's item. Then again, I think most collector's are fools in a way (this from a record collector, I've paid nearly $200 for a single piece of vinyl).
