Elmarit 90 front element rotates

The front element of my Elmarit-M 90mm rotates when I rotate the aperture ring. 😱

Is this normal? If not, how do I fix it?

Not sure what you mean by front element, and not sure what you mean by Elmarit-M.

If you are talking about the v1 Elmarit, and if you mean the entire block from aperture and forward, that is normal (lens head is removable for Visoflex). Just tighten it.

Otherwise, a picture would help.

You are correct on both guesses. The item in question is indeed a v1 elmarit and the moving block is everything in front of the aperture blades. With that out, I can touch the aperture blades (not that I really did). There is a shim (ring shaped spring actually because it is not flat) under that block too.

If I tighten that, the aperture ring gets very stiff and will unscrew the whole optical block when I change the aperture.

What should I do?

Begin able to split the block at the aperture is also normal, that works for several classic lenses, and usually should just be fixed by hand-tightening the assembly.

But the aperture should still move freely.

How does the lens perform ?

I am asking because you might be missing a shim, between focus mount and optics. That should be visible in photos (strong back focus).

If focus is OK, the aperture ring needs to be adjusted. Cann't give exact advice because it's been too long since I cleaned one of these. But I remember, taking the aperture ring off was not too difficult.

Maybe you want to send the lens to a pro ....

It's a new lens and I am still going through the first roll. I hope I'll remember to update this after I finish the roll.
