Yesterday, Fgianni called an emergency extraordinary meeting of the RFF Birmingham UK chapter, to be held at "The Covered Wagon" pub.

It seems that his RD-1 shutter had locked up and Epson had replaced his camera with an exchange body. Consequently he was unsure whether the rangefinder was as well calibrated as his old one and he wanted to have a go with my Noctilux wide open to check it out.

I duly attended his summons, in exchange for a pot of focussing fluid, with said Noctilux in tow.

As he was cavorting around the bar-menus at a distance of about 3 feet I mentioned that I thought the 75 Summilux was much harder to focus, so would he like to have a go with that. Well he did and got a lovely shot of a bar menu placed at 45 deg. with the middle sharp and left and right sides out of focus with a 'bokeh' that only a summilux can provide. He was very pleased that the range finder appeared to be accurate indeed.

I thought it might be of interest to others to have a quick comparison of the depth of field available from a selection of fast lenses at a focus of 10 feet.

Noctilux 50mmF1 dof = 8"

Summilux 75F1.4 dof = 5"

Summicron 90F2 dof = 5"

Elmarit 135F2.8 dof = 3"

Wow, that Noctilux sure is useful, even at F1

But how about these under the same conditions,

Summicron 50F2 dof = 17"

Summicron 35F2 dof = 36" !!!!!!!

Makes you think about which lens to use for bars, parties, and stage shots doesn't it ?

and how much confidence you've got in your rangefinder accuracy.

😱 😱

Well I dropped my M3 and a Summarit in the sea about 20 years ago. I recovered them when the tide went out and had them serviced later. I've still got them and they're both OK.

p.s. I think it was important to rinse them thoroughly under the tap, before sending them for service.

Hey🙂

I think the Birmingham UK Chapter needs to be disciplined for meeting in a pub called "The Covered Wagon". Don't you have a "King's Head", "PoW", or "Empress of India" up there in the Black Country? 😉
