End of Year Exhibition

Range Finder Forum has quite a collection of photos in the Member Gallery. Should we have an online exhibition to showcase the better photos at the end of the year? We could even make this an annual event. It is like a celebration of our effort in rangefinder photography. :D

I will second this. Just a special gallery where some shots are moved. The best of Year One. Can you tag a bunch of shots and just rotate them into this gallery every month or so to keep it fresh? Or is you make a gallery of say 8 places, can the server randomly fill them with specially tagged photos? Those are questions for the techically capable.

I like this idea as well. Maybe it could be put into the first annual RFF calendar...? I think a weekly calendar would be able to get a lot of the pictures in. I'd buy one. :)

We could have both an exhibition and a calender! But what we need now is a panel of photo critique and editors to select the photos for the exhibition and publication. Any volunteers?

I think any criteria would be good. After all, there is not prize here, other than pride. And good a good photo, is a good photo. Have you seen the home page at Pbase, 4 random images come up and link to a gallery. What if everyone who wishes to nominates 6 (a random number) of their own photos, and then the vote is taken from there. the top photos put into a gallery which is linked like that?

I hope we are not getting too far along for Jorge.

I don't have a good feeling about this... and I think Peter has hit upon the problem.

All,

Here's a suggestion for chosing the photos: make the process anonimous, ie, the photos proposed for election - in a separate gallery - would only show a number for id. After the votes were cast and the pictures chosen, the authors would be revealed.

Since this would naturally require new photos (as the ones already online are fully identified), this would have to be treated as a 2-3 month project, in time for the year-end show, or the calendar, or...

It would be fun, judging the pictures solely on merit and at the same time trying to guess who's done what, based on style...

OK, probably too complex for programming - Jorge, excuse me for suggesting this much work - but I feel that simply introducing this competitive spirit (voting, ratings, judging, committees) risks spoiling the good environment we have here. Just think of all the rating wars in photo.net, and yes, it is all about pride...anonimity is the only anthidode.

Rgds, Marcelo

i thought i would keep quiet on this for awhile...

first, i'm only the moderator here, and not too active a one at that cause you folks are so well behaved - any decision would be totally up to the webmaster himself.

but for me - i prefer we stay away from any kind of competition. i really look forward to coming to this site and would hate for that to change even in the slightest.
i have found most here very supportive and willing to offer feedback when asked - adding an air of competition could easily change that if people started to have hurt feelings and resentments.
granted, mine is a dire view of this but why mess with a good thing.
i think the real challenge is making the next shot better than the last, slowing things down and seeing more.

i imagine jorge will chime in with his views at some later time.

Hmmm... One of the things I like a lot from the RFF galleries is the sensation that you're 'sharing' your work with your colleagues, in order to let them see your photos and also receive feedback and advice from them so you can know if you're going 'the right way' or you should try to correct something instead...

I don't know if a project like this one would ruin that or not, but if the selection is based upon bare numerical ratings, I've seen some 'rating wars' in photo.net also, and IMHO, that leads nowhere... The anonymous system Marceloporto said may be a Salomonic solution and makes me think about that fun question too... Could we identify the author of a picture based only on the photo style ? :)

Let me be clear about my thoughts too, since I have chimed in a couple times about this. If I didn't express my ideas in this way, I don't think we should have a competition with this. My intention was to have a place to celebrate some of the better photos already posted in the galleries just to say I guess, "Look at what WE did!"

Dear Friends,

Please allow me to clarify my intention. I am not proposing a competition or a rating war of any kind but rather a sort of harvest festival at the end of the year to showcase the efforts of RF photogs. I totally enjoy the relaxed and family like atmosphere of this forum where RF newbies like me could post my work without being critiqued to death! If the majority of the forumers find my idea a prelude to bitterness, I would like to withdraw my proposal and apolgise for any inconvenience caused. :(

Yours Sincerely,
Peter

Peter, there's no need to apologise at all ! nonono please don't feel that ! ok ? Oh now it's me who's feeling bad :(

The 'buen rollo' in the forum and the galleries here is great, if we can manage to perform the end of year harvest without killing that spirit then the whole thing would be even better.

I think if we really want we can work the idea and lead it to a good conclusion, but Peter & Rover please come back ! :_(

Peter, we know your intention is good i.e. rewarding our hard work or luck (well, to me luck plays a large role in getting good shots :p).

However, to come up with this better photos that stand out from the rest, we can't avoid something like a grading system, right?

My personal opinion is to have more W/NW postings to show our hard work/luck rather than exhibition.

BTW, going off topic, has your Pancake II arrive yet? I still have 4 frames left in this roll full of PII shots. I think I should be able to analyse the results next week. I'm crossing my finger hoping my PII doesn't suffer from excessive decentering.

Cheers

Why not allow each member with a personal gallery to nominate just one of his/her own photos for the annual gallery. That way, no-one will be "sitting in judgment" on anyone else.
Just a thought.

I am still here Oscar, and I like John L's suggestion. Let each person nominate their own photographs. There are some folks, like Peter just to name one in my eyes, for which only one photo would be a tough cut, but we can work something out.

I am still here! I am sure we could work something out without hurting much ego. Kris, I have cancelled my order for the PII. It is not due to your rather negative exprience with it but because my wife found out about the order. She was really angry with me for buying all the CV stuff. Hence I am forced to cancel the order. :( I think the idea of one photo per member is a good compromise. I could live with that. :D

Hehe, good to see you both back to the discussion :D I like JohnL's suggestion too, by submitting only one picture, the difficult involved in that decision will make you think hard, and while you can use other's comments in order to choose some 'finalist' photos, the final judgement will be up to you... Hmm, I like it, there's no icon for this but  :)

i could live with this, picking one photo and maybe calling it 'favourites' as opposed to 'best'.

just a thought...

Having each photographer put in one photograph that they think is their best or most interesting sounds like a good idea. Since we all have differering ideas on what constitutes a good photo, let each of us decide what we would like others to consider our best or most interesting.

That is one of the problems of a "contest" for best photo. If I like landscapes, your great portrait may not impress me. And someone else's surrealism may look stupid to me, even if most others do like it. What I am getting at is that most "judges" will vote for their preference in photographic style, leaving other perhaps greater photographs getting short shrift. That is sort of human nature, but the photographers who don't see their photograph "winning" may not realize that was the reason, or agree with the idea that they didn't win for that reason.

On the other hand, if I post what I want to be considered best, I feel good to be able to do so. You all (or y'all bmattock, just get used to it :D ) also get an idea about me.

One last thing about critiques: I often visit Pop Photo's forum. Some photos are critiqued to death. I think some people critique just to have some input. For sure we can all learn from critques, but it can degenerate into something less than productive without care. I don't think the members here would be likely to do that. However, I too would be concerned about the current demeanor being preserved.

Just my thoughts, by no means binding on any others.
