It's funny how one can go through phases of shooting one film exclusively. I recently went back to shooting a lot of FP4+ after getting some cheap cans. I don't remember being this impressed with the tones and every so slight 'grittiness' that my standard Delta and TMAX films seemed to lack.

Good results there John.
It works nicely for long exposures too - the reciprocity failure helps!

Lovely pics (except the WELDING sign growing out of the head in the second), and a perfect ad for FP4. I've seen the same tonality in others' shots -- but I can't get it myself! At least, not in 35mm though I use it in LF.
Ilfosol, too... Hardly an arcane developer. Long ago I decided that alchemy, not science, is the only explanation why some films suit some people and not others. I also get angry with people who try to pretend that their choice is the only possible one (no, I know you're not doing anything like that, but depressingly many do) and that everyone should buy 50 rolls and "learn to use it". Your pictures are the perfect argument for trying all kinds of film and then sticking with one that works well for you -- as these do!
Addendum: Another lovely pic from Chris. Bugger, bugger, bugger: I wish I could do the same. But I've tried for decades and I just get on better with HP5. Or, among slow films, with Foma 200, which is almost identical in speed with FP4 in all developers, but slightly grainier. A further illustration that even the best films in the world won't always suit everyone.
Cheers,
R.

I agree with you about the "grittiness"
I also found the tone of FP4+ very nice. I developed in HC-110 (E)

Nice results John, I'm enjoying it too after buying some cheap 35mm FP4+. Lots more detail than my usual HP5+, better tones, more detail.. a lot to like.

Spot on Roger. And the welding sign does stick out like the proverbial. Framing 101
BTW, all these were taken with my new Zeiss Ikon ZI and VC 35/2.5 skopar. It is a combination that never gets in the way for this type of shooting.

Lynn, I need to try some XTOL. Vanbar?

I have never used D76. Time to try that also. Those tones are outstanding. Is the chemical composition similar to ID11? I used to use that back in the day but find the liquids so much easier to use.

yes John, Vanbar. Make sure you store it correctly - see the expired Xtol? thread

In the 70's I used FP4 (came inside a cardboard tube wrapped in foil). Thought that was cool.
I recently lucked into 300 sheets of 6.5cmx9cm FP4+ to use in my three Plaubel Makiflexes.
Always liked it in D-76 but just about everything works. Another personal favorite of mine is Pyro PMK+

Excellent study. (and up pops Xtol again...)

Real Men Shoot Film.
FP-4 is one of those films that seems to look good in any developer. I've gotten great results with it in D-76 1+1, Rodinal 1+50, and PMK. PMK is my favorite developer for FP-4 (and HP-5), but it looks great in every developer I have used.
